What are the details of "Trending"?

It's an extension of the hot files. So it's monthly*.

Edit: *This is true for most games, however, some games may have their hot files period set to longer or shorter.

I imagine that it's calculating Endorsements/30_days_from_publication or something of that nature? Or does it have a way to measure mods that become "trending" again well after publication?

It's based on endorsements received in the last X days after publishing. X depends on the "hotfile" period (trending duration) for that game, which is 30 days for most games, but shorter for the bigger games (Skyrim is 7, for instance). So, on Skyrim there should never be a mod in "trending" that has been published 8 or more days ago.
