Why are some modders so weird?

I appreciate all the hard work it takes to create and update mods, but as someone new to the "elder scrolls" modding community (january 2012) i've noticed a bunch of modders just up and leave with very weird reasons.. mesasges like "this will be the last you hear of me," and 3rd parties coming to post on their behalf with things like "due to personal circumstances * will not be returning in the near future if not ever again." Other reasons as well...

Seems like theres a lot of drama when it comes to VIDEOGAME MODDING...

Just thought i'd throw this out there as i find it pretty funny/interesting...

There is a lot of Stuck Up Modders as well. I thought I should put that out there. Ones that believe that no matter what there is no way anything could be the fault of their HOLIER THAN THOU MOD.

People put a lot of time and effort on their works. Life changes and interests change too. If they're not being paid to do that, I'd be surprised if most actually continue active for a long time. I've done big projects (unpaid) in other areas before and I also lost interest pretty quickly after a certain stage. Then, on to the next thing that catches my eye ;) This doesn't seem unusual at all.

Smig right, but it takes all of 2 minutes (not even) to log on, and say "i will no longer be updating or modding," which a bunch have done, but then i've seen these cases where the person disappears off the face of the earth and their online buddy or whatever will log on and say you will never see this person again! etc... like i said, its funny to me.

Good modders are artists and artists have a reputation for being temperamental.

Rabbit

We are not f***ing temperamental. :verymad:

Kidding :P Yeah, there are quite a few weird ones, and stuck up ones. There are also quite a few who make good mods but just do not care about the users and mostly do it for themselves. But part of the problem is that the people who use the mods, post comments, etc make it extremely stressful and difficult to be a modder. People constantly not reading the description or the ReadMe, following instructions wrong, begging for them to make a very specific version of the mod for them, all kinds of stuff that make it crappy, and only a small percentage of the people actually appreciate the modder, give useful feedback and suggestions, etc. Can't blame most of them, really, but I agree there are some weird ones that don't have much of an excuse to be how they are.

Some modders are insane masochists. (Like myself for instance.) Modding can be pretty brutal. Blood, sweat, and tears to build the mod. Then you might find out that there are certain computers it doesn't work on. You might find out that it conflicts with a really popular mod and no one will want to use your mod because they want the popular one to work. On the computers your mod does work on, the gamers may not be able to figure out how to install it even though the readme clearly tells them how to. The gamers may not understand how they are supposed to use the mod and say that it is broken or they don't like it. (And this is all because they did not read the readme and learn what it does and how to use it.) The gamers may say things like, "Yes, your mod does work on my computer, and I can see that you put a lot of effort into building it, but why did you build it this way? You should have built it like this: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX... "

But some modders are not masochists, have some other mental illnesses, or are not insane. A sane modder would be likely to quit modding or else go insane. Many sane modders have nervous breakdowns or otherwise go temporarily or permanently insane. They are likely to disappear as you describe at this point. Some of the narcissistic, solipsistic, anti-social, misanthropic, or zealot behaviors you may have witnessed by various modders are the results of various mental infirmities common in the group.

If you want to really understand the state of mind of a modder, take a dance with Sheogorath and build a mod.

But here I go with the logorrhea. No one really wants to read the rambling words of a madman, much less trust them.

Modding requires a lot of effort, not everyone has the time or will to put effort into modding if he won't even hear thanks. It is also a very complicated process. Most good mods require custom meshes, scripts and other advanced futures and you can't know it all (I dunno modelling for example and turns out finding modellers here is freaking hard).

It's especially hard for beginners. If a famous modder wants to build a team he usually finds people to work with. It took me 6 months to get 3 people. I'm glad recently I've got a little more help but it's still not enough an it still leaves me with a lot of work I must do alone. Many of those small modders eventually quit.
