A question about Blender

Hey there, I've been having a problem with getting Blender set up for a while now and the last time I installed it I couldn't import Bethesda meshes because it didn't have the netimurs addon/plugin/whatever you call it. I tried looking for one but came up empty handed. Then I read somewhere that I would have to get an older version of Blender if I wanted mod Beth games but I could never find out which version I needed.

Anyway, maybe I'm just stupid and I've been reading all the wrong internet posts this whole time but this is incredibly frustrating and I'm about ready to give up. If someone could help me out I would greatly appreciate it.

From the "Images" portion of the "Programs and Tools" section of the wiki "Getting started creating mods using GECK" article:

  • Blender v2.49b (freeware.) This download includes ALL related files and compatible versions. This is the "complete" package for creating meshes for Bethesda games; including:
  • Python 2.6.5
    Blender NIF Scripts 2.5.5
    NifSkope 1.0.22
    PyFFI 1.1.5
    "Noob to Pro" PDF tutorial.
Check out the "Optional" files section for some additional functionality. Recommended for FO3/FNV.

There are also tutorials and TIPs under the "Blender Mesh Editor" section further down.

There is a certain installation order that is necessary to have a functional Blender. The installation order is described on the description page that is linked in the post of dubiousintent.

There is also a newer version of NifSkope available from github.com https://github.com/niftools/nifskope/releases

You should also do an online search for any newer versions of the other programs.

Do not get newer versions of the nif import/export tools. The package that Dubious linked to has everything that works together.

There are newer versions of the nif tools that are meant to work with newer versions of Blender. They work to some degree, but there is a lot of stuff that does not work correctly with these newer versions. If you want things to actually work, stick to 2.49b and use the version that Dubious linked to. Everything in that package is the correct version so that they all work properly together.

As for NifSkope, I use version 1.1.3, and that works fine. The older version that is packaged with the rest of the stuff doesn't decode some of the shader flags. I haven't tried 2.0 so I have no idea how well it works with FNV. I'm a little leery of it since I don't know if it was updated for FO4 and therefore might have some compatibility issues with FNV.

Make sure you follow the instructions carefully when installing 2.49b. If you do everything in the correct order as specified, it will work.

I am currently using NifSkope 2.0 Dev 7 with FO3 and FNV armors and bodies, and it works so much better than 1.1.3. For one thing, when you do a "copy branch" it also copies the branch title so that you don't have to rename everything you copy from one item to another. It makes creating armor mashups and breast animations so much quicker and easier.

Oh wow, thank you so much everyone. :D I felt like banging my head against a wall for days now trying to get everything ready. :wallbash: You honestly have no idea how much I appreciate all of this. I realize that people have more important things to do in life then spoon feed some lazy newbi so I tried my best to figure it out on my own. So again, thank you all very much for your help.

Thanks for letting me know how it works. I'll probably give it a shot soon.

I just started using Blender in the last few days and it feels impossible to move anything around in that program. At least when it comes to bodies. It's hard to keep the feet parallel to the plane that represents the ground. If I were editing a gun or something I feel like it would be a lot easer.
