Wastelander121
It depends on the mods and commands really, quests and making epic fights using console increases it. I can't think of anything that decreases it.
omelette01
It depends on the mods and commands really, quests and making epic fights using console increases it. I can't think of anything that decreases it. i agree with you, i mainly use immersion enhancing Mods like "frosfall, Basic need,Skytest," and a lot of overhaul mods, like Skyre, ACE & Deadly Dragons. but when you read the article in KOTAKU i think they are thinking that we are modding to use silly item like ponies, macho dragon anime stuff and cheat item, i dont think the man who wrote the article know about the Immersion and overhauls mods or what are the possibilities with the community
StayFrosty05
Each person to their own with mods...personally Skyrim would have ended up just collecting dust on my shelf by now if it wasn't for these amazing game enhancing mods....some people want pink cartoon ponies, some people want realism, and there's everything in between. He mentions the temptation to cheat with console commands....Firstly, I am still trying to work out how someone cheats in a SP game, if that's what they want then that's what they do, it's their own personal game..... Secondly, he has pretty shocking self control then, that's obviously something he needs to work on....I run a Dovahkin who sleeps every night (reasonable hours, even if it means camping out), eats twice a day (balanced diet at that... ...), drinks regularly (have a mod that offers more than alcohol to the drinks list)....he never fast travels....and would rather back out of battle if possible instead of tossing back a few healing potions mid sword swing....I do all these things with no 'Basic Needs' or whatever mods to enforce them and why do I do this?...Because I find it gives me more enjoyment in the game, more depth as such and that's my personal choice with my game.....I use Console Commands sometimes...extra arrows or the armor I find aesthetically pleasing or due to a certain quest restriction (I pretend he makes them at the forge) and one or two other small additions sometimes.... Each to their own, what makes it most fun for each individual gamer is what's important. Edited July 24, 2012 by StayFrosty05
ginnyfizz
Don't forget how you sometimes have to use console commands to overcome bugs. It was ever thus with Elder Scrolls games (I bet there are quite a few others who had to console Morrowind's "Telvanni" bride out of her cage, that in fact was my first close encounter of the console kind). Skyrim is no exception, in fact from what I have read about the latest beta update you are going to need the console to not only complete bugged quests but to complete quests that you have already done and that the update seems to reset... But the main thing is StayFrosty05's last line "Each to their own, what makes it most fun for each individual gamer is what's important".
omelette01
@stayfrosty05 & ginnyfizz i cant put it in a better word, and i think how you play frosty is how a TES game is meant to be played, but i choose my RP mainly in my skill build and decision making ( sadly lack of ) so for some one like me i still need the added immersion mod like frostfall and basic need because without them i cant "RP" the need and restriction to my game play :D. and i laugh about cheating in a single player game in your comment its so true, we always did it from the NES and SEGA era, and if it a necessity like ginnifizz mention only add value of PC gaming in general because we dont have to wait somebody fix it for us : )
PharmakosChroster
Skyrim is literally unplayable on a PC without SkyUI. I can't imagine anyone actually playing the game with the useless, broken, consolized UI with which Skyrim ships. Beyond that, there's the usual tens of thousands of bugs (not an exaggeration) which get fixed with the Unofficial Patch, because Bethesda likes to use its paying customers as unpaid beta testers. And now, of course, it takes at least a dozen mods just to unconsolize the most egregious dumbification and graphics nerfing as Bethesda makes sweet, sweet love to the mouth-breathing console zombies. Furthermore, Bethesda relies on mods. You can see that Skyrim has, ahem, "borrowed" ideas and mechanics from the best of the Morrowind and Oblivion mods, including (but not limited to) all of Blacklreach (from Lost Spires), harvestable plants (Quarn's Flora Harvest), bookcases, display mannequins. and so on. Given that the PC market only represents 15% of the market for Bethesda and they're perpetually butthurt over piracy anyway, it's pretty clear they release a SDK and offer lukewarm PC support as a means of getting massive amounts of free work out of people who grudgingly spend their time fixing Bethesda's (limitless) mistakes. (Edit: "Cheating" in single-player games predates the NES by a long while. I remember owning a Snapshot cartridge for my C=64, for example.) Glhadiator
I agree with all the previous posters. Just want to add that the author of the article stated that he only used one Mod! C'mon man how does that qualify/quantify the statement that Modding and console use detracts from the game!!?? It seems to me that he could have done better research before reaching such a conclusion and then publishing it. I don't know any console player that started Skyrim on a console and switched to PC that hasn't felt that the PC version with Mods is a far better gaming experience and will never go back. The ability to use the console on the PC is cheating? Use the console and it speaks for itself. The article is obviously very biased and doesn't warrant any consideration as valid. p.s. @pharmakoschroster The first time I loaded Skyrim I stated out loud "Oh My God! What idiot designed this menu system? I thought I had fallen into a hot tub and went back in time!"
scot
Well that article sounds like console gamers are jealous, what´s even the point of it? If it ruins don´t mod nor use the console command unless you have a gun pointed at you and someone says to x) One day I was buying new vegas and a guy at the store said we don´t have the pc version but we have the ps3 one you want it? And "I said no, that doesn´t support mods and I´m more of a pc gamer" He said that mods were cheats and that´s not playing, I was like -.- mods are to add houses and weapons and to do whatever you want. Mods extend the durability of the games, graphics and fix bugs. I´m still playing oblivion because of mods XD
bben46
Sounds to me like a game box fanboi whining because he doesn't get PC console commands or mods. How many times have I seen "It's just not fair". Is my being able to use a full office suite, multiple monitors, any keyboard I like and able to reconfigure my hardware as well as play games not fair also? There is a lot more on my PC than just games. I have also run into that 'mods are cheats' attitude - please tell me, just who is being cheated and how? Neither is required to play the game on a PC so how could they possibly 'ruin' the game? If you don't like them, just don't use them. problem solved.
