Do Mods and console command Ruin the PC Version of Skyrim?

Ridiculous article...

Mods have become integral to the Elder Scrolls franchise and is a contributing factor to Bethesda's success. I know I'm not alone when I say that modding, and Bethesda's reputation for supporting modding to a greater degree than most other developers, played a part in my decision to purchase Skyrim for the PC and not for the PS3 or 360.

Modding gives the community the option to tailor the game as desired and push beyond certain limitations. They can make cosmetic improvements, tweak or change mechanics and balance, introduce new features and fix bugs to some extent. With mods making all that possible, I don't care at all if mods make the vanilla configuration of the game pale in comparison.

I've got 454 hours in Skyrim because mods have kept the experience fresh for me.

As for the command console ruining the game, it`s the player that ruins the game experience should they decide to use the console to cheat their way through Skyrim. The command console by itself does nothing.

Having the console available allows players to get past show-stopping bugs and glitches, helps mod creators test their mods, helps players create machinima and creatively composed screen shots and so on...

If some people choose to ruin their own game play experience using the console, that's too bad for them. For the community at large, the console is a very good thing.

I agree with bben46. The article sounds like it was written by a console fanboy who is trying to cheer himself up by trying to justify why modding and the console should be considered bad things. http://forums.nexusmods.com/public/style_emoticons/dark/rolleyes.gif

Is my being able to use a full office suite, multiple monitors, any keyboard I like and able to reconfigure my hardware as well as play games not fair also? There is a lot more on my PC than just games.

I just set up an alchemy spreadsheet to keep track of all the ingredient effects and interactions, so I guess I'm cheating. I could probably find the information online, but that would be cheating.

Just don't use cheat commands or cheat mods. I don't. And I don't because I believe that using them would ruin my gaming experience. And no, some people don't believe that and think the contrary. Good for them. I say do what you want to enjoy the game your way. It's your game, you paid for it  Do whatever you want.

If mods ruin the game for the person who wrote the article, that's too bad, but they don't ruin it for me, quite the opposite  . The article is just the opinion of whoever wrote it. Pointless reading if you ask me. And no, I never read it all. Got better things to do (such as working on my next mod  ).

Mods make Elder Scroll games for me.

Without mods I would have played Skyrim for about a week, just like a lot of game, and I probably wouldn't have played Oblivion for more than a day....just didn't like that game without mods really.

Only if you let them, or use them to do so. While you Can run around in God Mode, or use the CK to make everyone weaker, you don't Have to. Hell, even on consoles you can set the diff to Novice, cap out your armor, and smith up weapons to 1 shot giants. There's lots of ways to break the game, all of them Optional. If you don't have the Impulse Control to stop yourself, buy an Xbox.

I use the Console mostly to correct glitches, and CK/Mods for Fridge Logic things, like using a Forge to make tanned leather into Fur armor. Also, it's nice to break up the same-old with new quests, monsters, and (hopefully not Over Powered) items which come out faster than the Dev Team's schedule.

How could they???? If you don't want a modded game, don't mod it.

That is exactly what I thought when reading this 'article'. I see no one forcing anyone do download and use any mod, or use the console commands.

I use several mods which improve the look of the characters (makes me wonder why people on the PS3 and XBOX buy a game with poorly designed characters) and I've used the console command to change my character's appearance (something I do often) and to find my lost follower. If your using it to cheat that's your doing and no one else's.

I can't imagine playing the game and not being allowed to mod it. The first game I ever used a mod with was actually Doom! A friend gave me a mod that turned every enemy into the Energizer Bunny.

Man, what a ridiculous piece of writing. Though I think that's from the "Statement of the Obvious" department to most people who use mods.

The vast majority of my mods are texture replacers to get over the barf-inducing vanilla textures. A lot of of my other mods are things like SkyUI, Categorized Favourites Menu, Immersive Hud, Auto-unequip Arrows etc. i.e. things that overcome some of Skyrim's more primitive features. Not to mention stuff like the Save Hotkey mod to import some convenience into lessening my chances of corrupted saves by auto/quicksaving, or Skyrim Unplugged to attempt to take control of my game updates back from the clutches of Steam (though it didn't help the last time). Or the mod to make army commanders non-essential so you can actually carry out your orders to eliminate enemy stragglers after the CW quest.

I couldn't help but think of Mighty Dragons when the article mentioned cheating(yeah, a real "cheat" to make dragons and dragon priests umpteen times as powerful as vanilla).

The whole "mods are cheats" thing is stupid. Sure, there are god mods available but I'd wager they account for a very small portion of the total mods peeps have in their game.

As far as console commands go, I sometimes shake my head over how anyone on Xbox or PS3 can even play Skyrim. Other than the "prid... moveto player" command to recover lost companions, the only console commands I've used are to get around the @#$$! annoying quest bugs. (Oh, and "TM" for screenshots.)

But, hey, who am I to argue with a "Commentator" on the interwebz - lofty credentials indeed. :teehee:

I agree. The Elder Scrolls series is definitely better because of mods. As for console commands, I don't think I could live without them. I use them mostly to test my mods. As for cheats, any fan of TES wouldn't even bother looking at god-items and so on. Unless they are that type of player, in which case; they're entitled to do so. It's not a multiplayer game, so each to his own.

It is really getting tiresome seeing people rant about games becoming too easy because of things that are optional and don't have to be used or installed. If the person who wrote that rubbish can't exercise some self control with the dev console, that's his problem, not the game's. No one and nothing forces him to open the console and turn on god-mode or give himself 2,000 health or 50,000 gold or whatever stupid thing he's doing to ruin his own fun. That's entirely on him.

I just found the most awesome comment I've ever seen:

By the way, modding is your responsibility. You wouldn't blame the author of a novel if you ripped the back pages out of their book and wrote up a new ending that you found terrible.

edit 2/

Sometimes I feel like we need to remind people how important PC gaming in general and game mods specifically really are.

Liked weapon mods and custom ammo in Fallout New Vegas? Like the Hardcore mode? The binoculars? The iron sights? Yeah? Then thank the people who bought the PC version of Fallout 3 and created those mods which Obsidian later appropriated for New Vegas.
