CTD After Removing RCRN, Installing ENB

Domas

Recommended Posts

So after several hours of decent playing time (Put ~30 total into the game with RCRN and my mod setup, only a random CTD here and there - nothing unplayable), I decided to give ENB a try. Specifically, Superb ENB-RL.

Long story short:

-Uninstalled RCRN via uninstaller, disabled and removed esp file (why it was still there I don't know)

-Downloaded Superb ENB-RL and followed installation instructions in ReadMe*

-Opened NMM, checked ESP's & closed

-BOSS'd

-Ran Skyrim via Skyrim Borderless Window (SBW)

*At first, I skipped the section that said to go into Skyrim Launcher and make sure Realistic Lighting was checked (since I do that though NMM), so I initially missed the prompt where it re-detects the recommended video settings.

Here's a few screenshots of what my game looked like:

But at least I could play!

After realizing I needed to initiate the Skyrim Launcher, I ran it and let it re-detect the recommended video settings, which defaulted to Ultra High.

I should take this time to note: I used to run some ENB preset with FXAA Post Process Injector - which defaulted to Ultra High - with no problems whatsoever several months ago (Dec '11). I currently could run Skyrim with RCRN at Medium defaulted settings before trying out ENB again.

Anyway, after they defaulted to Ultra High, I tried to reload my game and, after a few seconds on the loading screen, CTD. I reloaded in an interior cell, and it booted up almost instantly. Thus, I only CTD in exterior cells. And Whiterun. (I'm not sure whether that's considered interior or exterior. Basically I can load up fine in any building).

Troubleshooting I have tried:

Taken from Superb ENB-RL ReadMe Troubleshooting section:

4. Bug Issues

i. Crash To Desktop?

(a) Make sure you are not exceeding the limits of your PC's specs. see below

(b) Make sure you are using the latest stable official GeForce/Catalyst drivers from Nvidia/AMD websites.AMD Catalyst v1.6

© Make sure you are using the latest stable version of Skyrim. v1.7.7.0

(d) Make sure you are using the latest stable Superb ENB-RL version. I downloaded it today

(e) Make sure all files are in the appropriate locations. I've been modding my games since Morrowind

(f) DO NOT DOWNLOAD OR INSTALL USING NEXUS MOD MANAGER!!! I didn't! >:O

(g) Disable as many active/background programs as you can. Disable GPU monitoring software, Steam Chat, etc. Done. I think. Does Steam Chat mean the Shift+Tab Overlay?

(h) make sure you have an ENBseries d3d9.dll in your Skyrim.exe folder. It was. See (i) below

or (i) Delete d3d9.dll. Visit http://enbdev.com/injector_generic_v0004.htm and download the Injector file.

Unzip and copy/paste the .exe file and the .ini file into your Skyrim.exe folder.

Note: YOU MUST launch the Injector.exe file FIRST and leave it running in the background.

After that, you may launch Skyrim using your preferred launcher. This is how I'm currently attempting to run Skyrim. Works just the same - CTD exteriors, Playable interiors

Now the system specs:

Intel Core i7 950 @3.07GHz

2 x 2gb DDR3 RAM

Radeon HD 5870 1GB GDDR5*

*Currently clocked at defaults (never needed more) @850MHz GPU, 1200MHz memory. I've also tried running the game overclocked, with zero difference, so I put the clocks back down.

If any more system information is needed, let me know.

All texture replacers I have installed are of the minimum resolution available. Generally all 1024. I can also run a texture optimizer if you think that would help, but I'm pretty sure I don't have any 2048's.

So, if anyone has any suggestions I should try or solutions to this CTD issue before I go back to - ugh - Medium settings RCRN, please let me know! My only guess is than I'm low on VRAM, and should either upgrade my GPU or buy another one to crossfire. Though I'm really not sure how this would be any more stressful on my system than when I ran it in Ultra High 9 months ago - considering I used the maximum resolution texture replacers that I could.

Preemptive thank you for any help or insight!

Hey I loaded ENB for the first time in a while myself two weeks ago. Try the 'performance' versions of ENB.

After I loaded ENB, I didnt have as many instant crashes as you, but I certainly had more than before. The stuttering increased and the FPS fell to a new low after install. Sub-20 FRAMES...

Before ENB, I used Realistic Lighting with an FXAA injector. Success with that sucked me into going to the next level.

I found in the end that I had to install the high performance version of ENB - ANY ENB - to get close to my earlier performance. This means the non-SSAO; non-DOF version of Superb ENB-RL that you find in the options folder in the mod download. You can also get non-SSAO only or non-DOF only versions. Try them out.

Also check carefully for stray files left over from RCRN, as you had to remove the esp file : (why it was still there I don't know). For me, the FXAA injector I had left files all over the place.

Finally, start turning off and on other lighting mods: Warmer Magic Lights; Lanterns Of Skyrim (obsolete?); Dynavision; Imaginator ... those last two may not be compatible with ENB; Superb ENB-RL or Realistic Lighting . Check their readmes or websites. Also DropLitTorches may have scripted animation effects that conflict with some bloom effect or other in ENB or RL.

After things improved with the 'performance' Superb ENB-RLversion, I moved onto other 'performance' ENB configs on Nexus until I found the perfect (for me) mix of FPS, color palette, lighting and shadowing. I kept Realistic Lighting, but Im using the straight RL default download from Nexus, not the Superb ENB-RLversion or the one I had before...

In all, a week of after-work experimentation and tweaking. Hope you have it easier....

Thanks for the quick reply! I tried what you suggested, and installed the non-SSAO non-DOF version, removed Lanterns of Skyrim and DropLitTorches, as well as disabled Dynavision and Imaginator. Also double checked for any loose RCRN files and didn't find any. I'm about to disable everything and start a new game and see if it's a possible incompatibility. Will update with more info.

Oh, also by installing non-SSAO+non-DOF version, it defaulted my settings back down to Medium. Since I know I can run Medium for sure, I'm inclined to believe it is not a VRAM limitation on my GPU.

If the 'performance ' versions made no difference, then yes it looks like you are in for the long winded route that I followed - remove half my mods and test; remove the other half of my mods and test; save a save with no mods loaded and test; download some other versions of ENB and test.... long and tedious.

I forgot to mention that I already have my Skyrimprefs.ini and Skyrim.ini configuration thoroughly tweaked and I followed all the performance tweaks in STEP - 'Skyrim Total Enhancement Project'

Also I found the the Basic FX ENB 1.3 off Nexus to be the best , low impact version of ENB after trying at least three different configs.

BTW, I recommend using SKSE. I found using SKSE as the game loader speeded up load times between maps in-game and this definitely helped performance

In the end, you may want to cut your losses and try Realistic Lighting instead - no performance impact!

Or the most drastic - as you already have an i7 CPU , maybe its time to upgrade your GPU to a GTX 6950 or GTX 570. But thats only a last resort. Good luck!
