Cave pieces not aligning properly

I'm making my cave in the Creation Kit and I can't seem to align cave pieces properly. The pieces I used here are:

 

  • CaveGLWall01
  • CaveGLCorner01
  • CaveGLCorner01

As you can see, there are some sort of holes between mid and wall pieces. Rotating each mid piece for 90° results in this:

And so on.

So basically, no matter what I do, these pieces can't align themselves correctly. So what am I doing wrong?

I thought to do that too, but then i realised that the holes appear on the ceiling too. I hope there's another way to do this, I really don't feel like putting tons of rocks onto cave ceiling...

When I made my first dungeon I noticed this too. Cave pieces are irregular, they match up as blocks but not in terrain shape, you know what I mean. Like it has been said using dirt mounds, rocks and pillars is the easiest and best way plus it removes the unnatural feeling of a square cave. Two things I did for the ceiling were to use inverted dirt mounds, this can be tricky as the axis of the camera controls are inverted when working upside down, and to make sure no light could be seen when the player looked up I used a blackplane. The blackplane is basically a sheet of black, I placed over the top of my cave, outside the cave, with the black face facing down and resized it so it completely covered the entire cave ceiling. Now when players look up they see no gaps because no light passes through the blackplane. This is just for hiding stuff, if you use the blackplane for other purposes such as walls and ground level it has no collision data so you can walk/fall right through it. Using it for hiding floor gaps does work but you're still left with uneven surfaces which the player/followers and NPCs will trip over/into because they are like obstacles so the dirtmounds are perfect.

 

As a precaustion if you're placing objects, rocks, dirtmounds, etc on the ceiling tick them as "Don't Havoc Settle" otherwise they will obey the physics engine and fall. Do this just for the first few then duplicate them so save keep ticking the box for each one.

 

To find the blackplane just type blackplane and select All. It is the only one.

When two interior models aren't snapping right, left click one of the unruly models then hold shift + Q and click the interior model you want it connected to. Sometimes this gets the stupid snap to grid mechanic to work. Best of luck on your cave! Edited by Kraeten

Thanks, I'll try it later. I'm done with modding for today. I actually found a way of my own an hour ago, but your advice sounds better so I'll give it a try.

There IS another way when you're building something square like that.

 

I think you mean CaveGLRoomWall01, right? If so, then:

 

Instead of using just the "01" wall piece on every side, you use 01 on one side, 02 on the next, 03 on the next, and 04 on the last etc. Same for the corner pieces.

 

If you do a "find and replace" on one of your "01" wall pieces and replace it with a "02" you'll notice it's rotated. Using these pieces in the right way you can get the whole thing to line up without bodging with mounds and such (as long as the room is square).

 

Do your first wall with 01, then duplicate an extra 01 piece, replace with 02, and use that 02 piece on whichever wall it is already rotated correctly for. Repeat with 03 and 04. Done.
