Rivet City Broken Bow

does anyone know the history of how the rivet city aircraft carrier got split in half? was it from an attack during the great war or from water levels dropping and pressure being put on the ship?

It was involved in a collision with the peninsula south of the Washington Naval Yard which snapped off the bow.
