is your current gaming environment on the same drive as your windows install? you may want to look at using steam to move your games, and back up your various mod directories to another disk or external pen drive as a temporary measure then re-import them once your system is back.

Yes, they're on the same drive.

You're saying if I format, reinstall steam and put back the skyrim folder where it is supposed to be Vortex will be none the wiser like it never happened? Doesn't Vortex have some config/prefs files I should save before formatting to allow it rebuild the file structure?

You will need to back up the following files:

  • Your Vortex Staging Folder
  • Your Vortex Download Folder
  • Your Vortex Appdata Folder (Appdata\Vortex)

Once you've done that, after reinstalling Windows, make sure you put those folders back in the same paths they were previously, then when you download Vortex again it should see the configuration as it was before.

If your games are installed to different folders you will need to point them to the right place when starting Vortex.
