Questions about vram, skyrim, and texture mods

Okay, I got my computer back around the beginning of july, with a new hard drive put in since my original one died. Now before this happened, I've been running loads of texture mods at 1024x1024 (or 1,366 file size) in size or smaller, and a couple 2046 sized ones with no issue with the high texture setting set in the loader. I just reinstalled skyrim, and steam, for about the fourth time now all because I tried to install my textures that I used to have, and the game decided it would crash a minute after loading up with them present. So now I've went and lowered all my texture mods to vanilla's resolution (I literally extracted and checked each file's size before down sizing my choosen retextures. Another thing just in case, I use gimp to change their sizes with the dxt3 option and create mipmaps option selected) on this fresh install, and yet I'm getting issues like I'm running out of vram (spontanous crashes, black or purple textures, that sort of thing). It's not happening too often, but I really don't understand why it is at all. My vram hasn't changed in size at all since I got my computer back, so I'm really lost here with why I'm getting this issue when I've never had this before and could load higher res textures without issue before I had this new hard drive put in. I did just update my graphics driver too.

Could this be caused by the recent patches? (1.6 and 1.7) Because the last time I've played was back when 1.5 was live and never had this issue. Or is something on my system needing an update that would help? Also could this be a sign that my graphhics card is going if it's not something that needs updated or anything with the patch? I mean if my hard drive died, I wouldn't be surprised if that was going too...
