joemodda
I've seen a lot of mods that require "OBSE 00015a" or something close to that.I know it stands for script extender but what exactly does it do?
WoogieMonster
From the wiki:The Oblivion Script Extender, or OBSE for short, is a modder's resource that expands the scripting capabilities of Oblivion. It doesn't make any modifications to oblivion.exe, TESConstructionSet.exe, or any other files in your oblivion install, so don't worry about permanent side effects. It is compatible with the 1.2.0.416, 1.2.0.214, and 1.1.0.511 Oblivion patches, as well as the 1.0 and 1.2 versions of the Construction Set. bben46
What Woogie said, loved the link. If you need it, OBSE is available here: http://obse.silverlock.org/ Be sure to read the install instructions, Because it is not a mod and does not install like a mod. nosisab
OBSE is one of the most misunderstood mods over there. First for not being a mod in itself (in the common sense). What it does is what it's name suggest, increase the scripting capacity supplying new functions the CS "understand and compiles" into actions the game can perform. So it acts in the CS time expanding the script compiler and (for most users the important part) ingame with actions the enhanced engine can perform. This is the reason a mod that uses OBSE functions rely on OBSE to perform in game, other way the engine wouldn't know what to do with that new codes and just skip them, or worse, crash sometimes. Being clearly defined and localized functions they are easily tested and almost flawless in stable versions, but the OBSE team can't be made responsible by the "how" the functions are used, at least no more the own Beth developers can't be for the vanilla ones. Sadly OBSE is wrongly blamed for common users (modders in this context) mistakes and that specific mod flaw ends becoming an OBSE flaw under the unadvised user vision. Edit: Some users don't even knows a named OBSE mod is just a common mod with functions from OBSE mixed with vanilla ones. I think is nearly impossible making a mod using only OBSE functions, anyway. nosisab
I wouldn't leave home (for Cyrodiil) without it!!Indeed, although the standard functions are enough to most necessities, some others are beyond the original engine capacity or hard or just time and resources consuming to implement without the low level alternatives OBSE supply. One need to think OBSE as a complement to the engine, not a substitute.
