bnxus
Hey, I have just started to use FNVEdit again and I noticed that I can't rename the ESM file name that are linked in an ESPs file header. I can't find a solution to this. Any help would be welcome!
dubiousintent
You can't just "rename" a master file (that I know of). If you desire to replace one master with another, you first have to add the new master file, and then "Clean Masters" to remove the old one as long as no records remain dependent upon the old one. (It's more complicated than just that.) This was done in "Example Stage-4 (Merge of Parent Plugins 1-3 into the new 'EVE-WMX-Impact.esp')" for the wiki article "Multiple file Merge-Up Procedure". -Dubious-
bnxus
Well, but it does. I found my old New Vegas directory with an old version of xEdit in it and it worked flawlessly to simply rename the esm in the file header of the respective esp. I don't know why this feature is disabled on the latest version.

It's disabled on the newest version because they realized how much you can break your game with it, so they removed as a safety feature to prevent people from wrecking their games. bnxus
s#*!, that's good to know. I had no issues with that method yet. I don't quite get it why changing the name of the esm is that much of a problem. Isn't it just like a path to the file? What can go so wrong? dubiousintent
That is the sort of question best asked on their Discord server. There is a link in the upper right corner of the xEdit v4 main screen. But as I understand it, basically when you change the name of a master, all the "dependent" plugins have to also have all record level references (direct or implied) to that original name changed as well or they become broken. That is not "automatically dealt with" for you except as discussed in the article I mentioned. And it applies not only to the plugins loaded at the moment, but all you may subsequently install. Just because something is "possible" does not mean it is "desirable". -Dubious-
