I need some advice

Do Nexus and steam conflict as a rule. I seem to be having trouble with ctd's and it seems like steam can not keep up with changes I make using Nexus Mods. I would like to do a complete new start and am wondering IF I should use the original Skyrim disk and then just use Nexus without steam. IS that possible?

I really like the Nexus crowd and system so am wondering if I could run Skyrim without also going thru Steam.

I've taken all mods and plugins off and use the steam logo on the NMM to start game and it still ctd. I can save my char hopefully but do not mind starting over if needed.

what is the best direction for me to take?

Any advice will be listened to.. thanx for ANY comebacks... the inj

Nexus requires steam to work.

First. have you downloaded and used BOSS to order your mods properly? IF not that could be the cause of your frequent crashing.

If you are making frequent changes, you would need to use BOSS after every new mod added to make sure your load order remains optimal, and also you would need to place mods that BOSS doesn't recognize manually. (usually just finding a similar type mod and putting with those is enough.

Unchecking mods does not actually remove the mod, and scripts, textures etc. remain. To remove all mods you would need to uninstall them, as directed by the mod author. Some have very specific procedures that will kill your game if not followed. An improperly removed mod might also cause the problems you describe.

In any case, it would not be steam that couldn't keep up with your mods, but possibly your own computer, if you are pushing the upper limits of your RAM or VRAM.

inj2020, hi, just to clarify, are you actually asking if SUBSCRIBING to SteamWorks mods causes

conflicts/issues with mods downloaded from the Nexus and installed manually or with NMM?

like Georgiegril said, you only need Steam to authenticate/validate the game once, and get patch updates; otherwise,

you can leave the game in offline mode and block Steam from getting access to your machine again.

I'd suggest you unsubscribe to any/all Steamworks mods you subscribed to; and,

search for and install the Nexus versions only.

Chances are, any mods on SteamWorks are also available somewhere here on the Nexus.

i don't know if/how Steam updates your mod load lists/order when you subscribe to steamworks mods; but,

you might be right and this could be causing issues with installed Nexus mods..

WHOA what a sorry install the boss list thing is, my God could they make it any more confusing... I'll keep trying but I don't hold out much hope for getting it done.. On the boss exe line I've pointed to every thing I can think of to make it work but it say there is nothing there... do I need to point to the exe that starts skyrim or the exe in the NMM that starts Skyrim.. really scratchin my noggin here!

I thank you much for your reply :))

If all you want is to modify your activated mods (since 1.5) all you need to do is modify:

(User)/Local Settings/Application Data/Skyrim/plugins.txt

Higher-priority plugins at the bottom, esms at the top (Skyrim.esm at the very top of the list), and lower-priority plugins in the middle.

inj2020, umm, my approach is whenever there's a new patch available and i'm ready to take a chance on

the new patch not breaking my modded game (or after monitoring reports by other people on patch/mod issues),

i'll first make a backup of all my existing skyrim game install/profile folders; then, go back to online mode with Steam and get the update.

Obviously, if the new patch breaks the game/mods and is not fixable, i'll restore everything with the backup copies, set offline mode,

and wait for mod updates/etc before trying the update again.

Be aware that putting Steam/Skyrim in offline mode and configuring the Steam client never to automatically update does not

necessarily insure that Steam will not automatically update.

There are reports that Steam resets the automatic update setting on its own; so, look into a Steam blocking mod.

Can't really help you with the BOSS utility, i don't use it and i do not tamper with the plugins.txt, keep trying lol.

Look here for a tutorial and video:

You may want to consider using the Nexus Mod Manager (NMM).

I'm an old duffer so am used to gettin beat up by these infernal machines....believe me sometimes I think horse shoein was easier lol
