And is that one available on steam to? (For same price ^^) hehe Price realy doesn't matther that much.

You can get the GOTY edition on Steam for $20 with the game and both expansions. There's also the GOTY Deluxe edition on Steam which has both expansions as well as all the other DLC. It's still fun and there are plenty of differences to make it not feel like just a slightly older Skyrim. For example, the leveling system is a lot different because you have a somewhat more traditional RPG system with stats like intelligence, strength, agility, etc.

I also liked some of the major sidequests more than their Skyrim counterparts. For example, I remember I liked the Fighters Guild and Mages Guild (comparable to the Companions and College of Winterhold) and Thieves Guild questlines more. There are a few gameplay issues, though. For example, level scaling was notoriously absurd for having things like generic bandits rushing at you in full sets of glass armor, but you can fix that with mods. Then there's the Oblivon gates, which I just found repetitive and samey.

What about Morrowind?

Morrowind has a steeper learning curve but it also has one of my favorite game worlds of all time. Just don't expect as fluid a combat system; your weapon skill affects both the damage you do and your ability to hit your enemy, meaning even if they're directly on your crosshair, you'll still miss a lot of attacks early on. It also has the most annoying enemy in video game history, the cliff racer, who will probably kill you at early levels just because you have no idea where their hitbox is. The stealth system is also rather dated and doesn't have the eye from the latter two games that shows you how close you are to being detected. Of course, it does have a lot of the abilities and spells that were removed entirely like teleportation, levitation, and so on.

In the end, I'd recommend both games, especially if you're interested in the story/lore since events from both get referenced in Skyrim. They each have their own pros and cons but they all have the same open world feel to them. Just as a word of advice if you play Morrowind: if you can, install the Tribunal expansion after you beat the main quest because it's kind of nonsensical if you don't.

I STILL play Oblivion. If you are new to it, buying Oblivion will give you at least two games; Oblivion with it's great DLC, and modded Oblivion. The (absolutely awesome) mod community has had years to tweak Oblivion mods. You can make it into a completely new experience with available mods. If you like Skyrim at all, you owe it to yourself to try Oblivion, IMHO. There is a different "feel" between the games, so I guess it depends upon what you like about Skyrim, but for twenty bucks a GOTY Oblivion is pretty much a bargain. Go for it and come back and tell us your experience; a lot of us did Oblivion first and it would be interesting to hear your opinions on doing Skyrim first.

You may want to re-map a couple of keys in Oblivion if you play on a PC; a couple of changes between the games can make quick decisions a little frustrating. ;)

I have very fond memories of Oblivion. As for the DLC's. Slobbering Isles was one of the worst. Even Bethesda couldn't keept its lore straight. I was a Big fan of OOO overhaul and a string of others I burned to DVD jsut so I never had to hunt them down again. Rens work was simply beautiful and required for my gameplay. So many good modders, like now, step up to the plate and give us more then we ever imagined. That is the best DLC you could ever dream of getting. A showcase for future game designers to hone their skills on.

I am, and will probably always be, a fan of Oblivion. It is awesome in ways that Skyrim can't even come close to. Add to it the DLC Shivering Isles, which is pretty much a full-fledged game in itself, and you have a combination that's hard to beat. Yes, Skyrim does some things better than Oblivion, but so much has been cut from previous ES games in Skyrim that Skyrim is pretty much a shadow of Oblivion in functionality. Like someone else already mentioned, I sorely miss spell crafting. The inability to whack a slaughterfish with my dagger while underwater is laughable.

Don't get me wrong. I love Skyrim. I also love Oblivion -- just for different reasons. So, yes. Get Oblivion. Don't forget to add Shivering Isles, too. It's my favorite place to play in both games. The Nights of the Nine DLC is pretty good, too.

I used to think that Oblivion was the greatest game ever! However the graphics and the game play really haven't aged well at all! Which is kinda funny because I went and tried out Morrowind for the first time and liked it as much if not more than Skyrim. Actually, one of the things that I noticed right off the bat is how similar Skyrim and Morrowind "felt". The interiors, the way that NPC's looked and reacted to you, and how each dungeon was handcrafted into the game just blew my mind! Trying to play oblivion again after playing those two games was really difficult.

This isn't the first time this question has come up and I'm going to give the same response I gave before. I think 90% of the people in this thread are bias because they played Oblivion first and they're not really qualified to give a fair answer to the question.

Nostalgia has a way of clouding judgement as well.

From someone who played Skyrim first, I've tried to get into Oblivion about 6 times now both on PC and Xbox 360 and I just can't get into it. I've logged over 100 hours, enough that I feel like the game should be taking off, but it's just not happening.

All I ever heard was how much better the side quests and story was in Oblivion, but so far they're the same fetch quests as Skyrim. In fact, a lot of them are worse because the game makes you deliberately wait 24 hours before getting your reward as the NPC "prepares" your potion, or what not. Lots of things are timed, so you have to really pay attention to the hours. Not a big complaint actually, but not really anything special.

I'm having a real hard time finding things to DO in Oblivion. Skyrim lets me walk around an I can find random encounters constantly, but all I see is the occasional wolf or imp in Oblivion.

The leveling system is horrid. In over 100 hours I'm about level 4 or so IIRC, and yes I'm aware their are mods to fix things, but we're not talking about modded Oblivion now are we?

I could go on, but like I said, this has been discussed before.

Out of interest, is there a set of mods which improve the look and feel of Oblivion without altering gameplay too much (unless they improve on bugs etc.)?

I fancy giving it another go, but would like to make it look as 'modern' (i.e. detailed graphics etc.) as possible.

Nope, not nostalgia.
