Loading Screen Failure

OK, sometimes when I load Fallout 3, the loading screen freezes on the Bethesda Slide, no mouse, not control nothing. Sometimes if I push control alt delete the task manager pop up comes through and allows me to find the Fallout 3 app and shut it down. Sometimes not. In not, then I have to shut down manually and restart. I hear such things can damage your computer and these loading failures occur between one fourth and one third on every attempted start. There has got to be a better way, and I do not know where else to ask for help.

It's not a master file or load order problem. It were the former, there would be a CTD every time upon starting. This is not the case. And load orders can cause freaky problems true, but only upon actually loading a save. No, this is something else. It loads, and then fails to load completely. My working guess is that there are a number of background processes going on that soak up my PCs limited juice, as seen in the process bar of the task manager. However, barring manually shutting down these processes manually (which seem to destabilize the system sometimes), I am not computer savvy enough to fix the problem myself.

It's a legit copy of GOTY I got at Walmart. My computer is up to specs to run even Skyrim except that my computer, being originally designed as a business PC, has a 255 watt power supply that I can't get around for less than a price where it would be better to just go and buy a new computer. I surf the internet a lot, so there could be gunk from that my anti-virus and malware stuff isn't fixing. It's probably a lot of legitimate background gunk (I have to manually shut down the Yahoo messenger system I don't use and the Ipod related Apple programs via task manager to have a prayer to get Fallout 3 to start properly) but I don't know how to make my system leaner. I would probably need a live human being to sit down with me and explain the totality of the operations in order to do that too. I cannot use simple instructions, on account of being scatterbrained, I need to know the totality of how the system works if I am to understand what the hell I'm doing. Just telling me might work once, but if anything goes kooky, the whole thing will be far too nebulous to recall or figure out a solution on my own.

The fact that you can run a new game like Skyrim has no bearing on the ability to run an older GPU dependant game like Fallout 3. In order to supply even a guess to your problem, you would need to post your system specs and load order. Having a 255W power unit would suggest that your equipment is not up to running Fallout 3.

Get the official 1.7 patch, an run that, even though GOTY is already 1.7, it resolved some issues in the past. If it's still doing it, uninstall the game, go do something else for a few days. You should clean the registry an discs, an viral scans with a 3rd party maintenance program such as Norton or Registry Mechanic, otherwise what little power the business rig has will be dragged down after only 6 months. I've seen in Windows 7 at least that between 3 different installs of the game there were a handful of pesky issues that were resolved. There are a few other issues in particular but it didn't sound like they were the cause of this issue. So come back if you have those, an we'll cross that bridge when we get to it. You can get a stable 8 hour game with FO3, but it's not always easy as pie.

PIE, WHO SAID PIE GD IT! :O

*edit* Windows 7 themes cause problems with this game, you could try using a personalize/windows basic theme
