LieutenantHawk
I absolutely love Skyrim's soundtrack but being a huge classical music enthusiast I thought it would be interesting to make a mod that replaces the music with an older style. As large as the scope of "classical" music is, it shouldn't be too hard to find pieces that fit the desired atmosphere quite perfectly. I'm using stock tracks from a website that allows free use and distribution: freeplaymusic.com.They have quite a huge collection of classical music and I can't browse all of it myself due to time restraints. I just wanted to ask for requests from you, fellow modders and Skyrim players, who also enjoy orchestrated tunes. Name some classical songs you know that would fit combat/explore/dungeon/public settings in Skyrim. Any help would be appreciated! In the future I also plan to make a music mod of the stock soundtracks on that same site, which are quite abundant as well. David Brasher
Sergei Rachmaninov's Prelude in C Sharp, Op. 3, No. 2. EDIT: Oops. That suggestion probably would not be orchestral but would be done solo. Edited August 27, 2012 by David Brasher
Rabbit1251
I've heard Oblivion put to a classical score and it came out quite nice. Rabbit
McMutton
Gotta have Dvorak's New World Symphony (4th Movement) as boss music: Probably just the first two minutes. Edited August 27, 2012 by McMutton
Tzontlimixtli
Should try some Greig. Being Norwegian a lot of his stuff is based on Norse lore, as far as I remember. "In the Hall of the Mountain King" would be an especially apt piece for Skyrim.
Georgiegril
I have personalized music and have added a few classical tunes. I think that medieval music in particular works well in the dungeons, like Josquin DesPrez. Nothing like beheading Draugr to some echo-y monks.... Also more cheerful medieval instrumentals fit in the cities. At least to my taste.

In the future I also plan to make a music mod of the stock soundtracks on that same site, which are quite abundant as well.Oblivion only used five (or was it four?) different music categories. Skyrim uses 20! They are the following. 1 for the Jarls' castles4 for dungeons: regular, fort, ice, cave5 for explore areas: tundra, snow, mountain, fall forest, pine forest4 for different times of day: morning, day, evening, night2 for taverns: the ones in the big towns, the others1 for the five big towns3 for combat: regular fights, dragon fights, civil war fights This means you can customize Skyrim's music in great detail. At the same time, it forces you to make these very detailed choices about the music you add to the game. Also, if you plan on making a music mod, my advice is to use the .compressed .xwm format and not .wav.

I've extracted and examined Skyrim's music file structure, I've made a .xwm converter, etc. I've done this a few times before, just not with classical music yet. steve40
Oblivion only used five (or was it four?) different music categories. Skyrim uses 20! They are the following. Plus you can create new music categories with the CK and invoke them via script. It's also possible to change the default music categories for specific regions or cells afaik.
