"Hearthfire" Negative Talk

I've been going through the Nexus downloads for Skyrim in the last few hours...and I gotta say...the comments towards "Hearthfire" is pretty shocking.

A ton of modders (and surprisingly some non-modders) are feeling pretty negative against this new DLC. After thinking about why they feel this way...I can sympathize and I don't blame them. A lot of the content in "Hearthfire" has been done with the Creation Kit since February. Also the major gripe has been that this DLC has stuff that can be done with the Creation Kit. True. But for $5 bucks for added content (not an expansion pack!)...its a freakin steal!!! I don't think Bethesda is wasting their time by giving us the ability to do things that we can do already. Also majority of Skyrim players own the game on X-Box 360 and PS3. Not really fair to them that us PC owners get to play in this great sandbox and they never get a taste. I say about time. Now maybe they'll stop crying about how unfair it is that we get to do things they can't.

But then here is my point: There are many mods for houses (more than I care to count) and I never, ever found one that suited me to the way I would build a house. "Hearthfire" now gives me the chance to build a house that fits MY characters needs. I would think the modding community would appreciate new content (and new animations and materials) to try something new instead of the same ole "modded house". I don't see it as a negative...I see it as a challenge to modders! Do something different. Do something never done! Do something AMAZING!!!

CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!!!!

Except Build Your Own Home already does that. At any rate, I'll reserve judgement on Hearthfire until it's out. Bethesda usually tends to implement things into the game better than modders, except in some cases. Edited by trainwiz

I'm eagerly looking forward to Hearthfire. While most of the ideas have already been seen in mods, don't forget that Hearthfire is being made professionally. Time will tell whether it's a hit or a dud.

This dlc is obviously more aimed to consoles. I don't mind them getting some of the possibilities we already have on pc. If this get released on pc later on however, it is probably the only dlc I will not buy for Skyrim. I rather do these thing in th CK, with tons of more possibilities.

I also don't think this type of functionality fits the game at all. This is minecraft stuff.

At least it is cheap.

Also let's be honest here - the Build Your Own House mod is based off the game-jam video, where Bethesda created functionality to build your own house. Guess what? Hearthfire IS that build-your-own-house segment in that video, except here it is fully realized into a polished house DLC.

So if anything, that mod is based off Hearthfire.

That said, I wouldn't buy it. IMO there needs to be more in there than just "have a family, build a house" for me to want to spend money on it as DLC, especially with mods out there that do similar things if I really cared for that aspect of gameplay. I feel like this is a thing that'll be a bigger deal for the teenage girls on the 360 who don't own the Sims and love skyrim enough to want to spend time making their virtual family. Not most of the PC audience.

That's what I say. If this was a $20 dollar DLC then i'd start crying foul! But for 5 bucks! It is a great steal! Console players will absolutely love it...not so sure about PS3 users though. They have been getting royally screwed by Bethesda.

Also...i've seen the arrogance of console players. Arguing that we PC owners do not play Skyrim the way Bethesda originally intended. Which is crap, because Bethesda is the one that gave us the Creation Kit. But now i'm starting to see some arrogance in PC players now. "Why do we need "Hearthfire"? Didn't we already create this with a mod?" REALLY?!?! I think anything that Bethesda gives us as a community should be looked at as positive. Console and PC players are all part of this Skyrim community and if they give them a taste of what we experience and share it with us too I think it's fantastic! Don't play it off like its nothing...its something...and for CHEAP! Edited by majikku22

In the discussion of Hearthfire I was told that using resources from a DLC was a ban-able offense on Nexus, which surprised me. Is this true?

That's only if you use the resources without the DLC. For example, say I created a mod that has Crossbows, but doesn't require Dawnguard. That's a ban-able offense. However, if you merely add more Crossbows to the game, but it requires Dawnguard, then it's okay.

Well depends on what you mean by resources.

If you upload resources from a DLC into your mod, then technically it is a banable offense as you are uploading work made by Bethesda from their DLC for "free" for general use. I.E. if Hearthfire adds certain weapons/armors/displays and in your mod you upload those resources, then you are uploading pirated content

However you can certainly USE resource from the DLC as long as you don't upload those resources. In that, your mod can require you to have the DLC as you use a certain display/armor/etc from it. That's perfectly fine, because you aren't actually uploading the actual thing from the DLC, you are just using it/modding it in your mod, and requiring people to actually have the DLC in order to use it as well.

Well technically you can still upload a mod that adds crossbows. They just can't be the crossbows (and crossbow mechanics) that Dawnguard adds - it must be original work. Versus "Hmm I'm going to upload these crossbows and things from Dawnguard for other people to play with!"... then you're likely to get banned.
