Issues with "broken" Fallout 4 mods when switching profiles or games

Alright, I really hope someone can help me with this.

Whenever I switch back to Fallout 4 (or between F04 profiles) in Vortex, a wide variety of mods stop working. This includes everything from DEF_UI to various outfit and workshop mods (assets are just not there). None of my other games (SSE, FO3 and NV) exhibit this behavior, only Fallout 4.

My theory is that this is a cause of my having originally (and, I admit, hastily) installed FO4 on the C drive of a new PC I got back in February (I had just come back to PC after years of console-only play) and then later, when space was running short, used a "symbolic link" (thanks to a video tutorial) to move everything over to the D drive in such a way that I didn't have to rejig any mods. All three of the other games I mentioned were installed after this and all were installed to D.

Assuming my theory is correct, I'm further guessing that I'll have to undertake a full reinstall of FO4 in order to correct the "broken" mods situation (note that simply reinstalling the mods in Vortex corrects the issue; the trouble with this is that it's not obvious which mods are affected until encountering the issues in game, and I really don't like the idea of saving under these conditions).

So here's my question: would I have to delete all of my mods in order to pull this off? I have no concern about retaining any save game files; I'm just not thrilled about the prospects of having to go through all the bother of finding and redownloading everything. Or (fingers crossed) could I simply redirect a path somewhere?

Any thoughts and suggestions are heartily welcome and appreciated.

Hi Falah,

I would suggest you do the following.

1) Purge all your Fallout 4 mods in Vortex and close the app.

2) Reinstall Fallout 4 to your D:\ drive.

3) Open Vortex again and scan for Fallout 4 (ensure Vortex is able to check your D:\ in Settings -> Games -> Search paths).

4) Deploy your mods.

I suspect using symlink for your game folder could be causing some weirdness.

Well, thanks for the advice but unfortunately it didn't work. By which I mean, I followed your steps and everything seemed to be fine -- reinstall went to D, reinstalled my Creation Club stuff, a few things from Beth.net that needed to be downloaded again, and a couple of other mods that didn't show back up. Save files were there. I loaded the game and all was well.

Then I switched over to SSE, loaded my most recent save (all good), then switched back to FO4 to find all the same problems -- missing outfit textures making my character and some NPCs appear largely invisible, DEF_UI not working, various workshop items not appearing, etc. -- all the same stuff as before.

Any other ideas?

UPDATE: As it happens, I can still find both Steam and Fallout 4 on my C drive. Perhaps I need to delete all of this, or possibly even reinstall Steam?

For prophylactic reasons, I always hit Deploy after changing profiles or games.

You might try that and see if it has a salubrious effect.

Ha! I just came back to report that I did exactly that and everything is right as rain. Much less time consuming than removing and reinstalling individual mods.

Would you be able to provide a few examples of the mods that "disappear" on changing games? I'd like to try and replicate this. (DEF UI is one of them you've already mentioned.)

Hi. Sure, Crimsomrider's Unique Furniture, Tough Girl Attire, Pampas Set, Wanderer's Trench Coat. I'm drawing a blank on more because now that I've figured out how to correct I've naturally been preemptive and the last time it happened (when I posted) I didn't investigate specifics. I know a couple of painting replacers also stopped working but they, um, weren't sourced from the Nexus. (EDIT: Scratch that: Vault Meat Paintings is on the Nexus and it is affected.)

Let me know if it would be helpful for me to let the issue occur again and take a more comprehensive look. But if you do replicate the issue, anything you'd built from Crimsomrider's UF will be gone, and anyone wearing those outfits will be invisible except for their heads and hands and possibly other modded gear (the hats and harnesses from Modern Firearms, for instance, don't seem to be affected)
