Steam - GreenLight

I think it's more of how the industry works that isn't explained more than how to use it - Things like asset usage and copyrights and IP handling. There's probably a dozen or so of these games here that violate one of those three without them even knowing about it because they just want to get into the scene and get the attention they think they deserve.

However, we can't really ever expect AAA-quality (ha!) games to come out of this, but you do have to be careful on how far you carry this indie phenomenon because, as with all fads and trends, all of a sudden that attention they are getting is going to disappear. Then what's going to happen next?

Maybe I'm being generous with my value assessments... But that's more than none. And that's just the ones I've come across, and not counting those which I would still consider reasonably high quality, but are more geared to the casual gamer or are not something of significant length... Like puzzle games, platformers, ect, but which would likely sell.

There's some pretty good ones being showcased. Of course, the majority is either a joke, or someone wanting a certain game to be on Steam, but they're not the developers. Don't think lightly about Indie games, there's quite a few gems out there ;)

Also, given that it is nowadays a lot more easier to work on such projects with less people, this "Indie Phenomenom" is here to stay for quite a while. It's either known developers who need a fresh start, or someone working up the ladder to have a better chance of getting recruited to a major Game Development Company.

So to wrap it up, as Steam is one of the most used platforms, it's good to see this kind of support for smaller companies/teams. WE tell THEM what we wan't to see. There will be trolling, obviously, but the feature seems like a pretty good idea :)

Great. Now they've updated it, and you can only see 12 of the entries each time, which is generated according to your preferences - They did this in order to solve apparent "discoverability" issues with the games, along with a $100 charge in order to curb joke and illegitimate entries. Most of the time, out of 12 entries, only 9 or 10 of them are new and I have no interest in them - Why can't I just take a look at all of them at once?

The $100 bar isn't exactly a good start either - Requiring credit and debit card info would be a better solution to determine legitimate entries, even though it's going to a good cause (Child's Play).

Steam already has you using your cards to buy games so I don't really see how providing that information again keeps people from uploading joke entries. The $100 fee will keep trolls out and for someone who as poured potentially thousands of hours into their work a $100 charitable donation shouldn't seem outrageous. Especially since it is the same fee which will ensure most games on the Greenlight are legitimate and get proper page time instead of entries being pushed to the bottom by jokes and having the voters getting tired of sifting through hundreds of entries where some kid just put up a meme.

I think a lot of good could come out of the Greenlight.
