RatTech2099
I've played the main quest several times with a variety of different characters and each time Baurus was killed by Raven Camoran and the two Mythic Dawn thugs with him. Yesterday I managed to kill Raven Camoran by forcing him back into the narrow passage and preventing Baurus from getting past me. The two thugs with him couldn't get past him either and he couldn't use his long sword effectively in the narrow passageway. My character was armed with a wicked sharp artifact short sword and was able to swiftly kill Raven Camoran and then the two thugs. I was all excited that I'd finally stopped Baurus from being killed and then............. the @!$%&@$% game crashed. I went back to an earlier save game 3 times and I just couldn't manage to stop Baurus from getting killed each time. In the end I had to give up. I like Baurus as a game character and I really did want him to survive. Any tips from the wise as to a better way to do this. The character I'm playing is a custom one of my own devising and she's good with a sword, not much good with magic and barely passable as an archer. Striker879
Don't underestimate the value of poisons ... I prefer self made but even vanilla can help tilt things in your favour.
Oblivionaddicted
Set Baurus as essential.
RatTech2099
This particular player character didn't have much in the way of alchemy skills, but I have played stealth characters who were great poison makers and always had poison arrows to hand or else a poisoned dagger. I agree that they can make a big difference when playing a character who isn't much of a melee fighter. I did think about making Baurus essential, but I'd much prefer it if I could prevent him being killed without resorting to such measures.
Striker879
The UESP Wiki for that quest has some tips.
RatTech2099
Once I started looking I found a lot of information about Baurus and how to keep him alive so I'm feeling a bit more confident about how to make a better job of things next time.I also found my original Oblivion discs at last so I'll be giving the buggy Steam version the toss and hopefully I'll be able to play the game without it randomly crashing from time to time,
RatTech2099
Yes that did it. I took a good bow and some seriously nasty poisoned arrows with me this time and wiped Raven Camoran and the two Mythic Dawn guards out before they even got close to Baurus. I had a a 'heal on target' scroll ready should it be needed, but I didn't have to use it.My character is primarily best with a sword, but she did just fine using a bow at short range in a melee situation by being quick on her feet. She got in a long shot for free while Raven Cameron was struggling to open the gate into the sewer chamber, but needed a second one to finish him off. The two guards went down with just one shot each. Edit: The poison I used came from Redwater Slough. Knew it would come in handy one day.
