Extremely annoying ads...

Well, I just attempted to log in to TES Nexus, except I ran into a bit of a problem. I got by username typed in the appropriate box, but when I clicked in the box to enter my password, a pop-up comes up, thus becoming the active window and not allowing me to enter my password.

I try closing the pop-up or clicking back in my browser window, but whenever I click in the password box, another bloody ad comes up! It won't even let me delete or retype my user name.

I'm wondering if this is somesort of malware or trick. This happened to me about a week ago as well, but I thought nothing of it at the time.

I patiently await a response. :)

I had the problem whenever I logged on from school, or when I use IE as my browser to log on, luckily Opera blocks all pop-ups, so with it I can safely log in without getting any pop-up **SNIP ** in the meanwhile. **SNIP**

It could be malware on your computer also, you might want to scan your computer with spybot for example, just to be sure. If these popups come on other sites where you need to log on aswell, it is most likely malware. It could also be a 'targetting' malware that only does it on this site based on your own preferences. Won't be sure until Dark0ne confirms whether there actually are popup ads on the site.

EDIT by LHammonds: Bypassing the curse filter and discussion of ad-blockers are not allowed.

(Elraine)edit; Ah, forgot about not being allowed to talk about that, anyway, the word you censored is just something I generally say, to avoid using the actual curse word, but I'll watch out so you won't have to watch my back all the time.

I have informed the company that deals with the pop-unders about malicious campaigns but I need more proof; including any screenshots and URLs that can be provided. Any proof you can provide will not only help remove them from the site but also help in any legal action that could be possible against the responsible parties.

As I am in the UK I do not see all the pop-under ads that there are so I depend on you folks to help out! Thanks.

I got your evidence right here, Dark0ne!

[1] This pops up for a fraction of a second after I click somewhere on the TESNexus site.

[2] And swiftly appears as this warning thing. I click "Cancel"

[3] and it reinitiates itself. I was speedy with the print-screen, and manage to snag this image before the bogus warning reappeared. I swear, that thing I captured only appeared for a microsecond.

[4] I click cancel and try to ignore the stupid thing, and it brings up this in the background.

[5] It performs a bogus scan with bogus results (I have never in my entire life visited an "adult" website).

Looks like a variation of the malware XP antivirus. Check out the informative article of this devious pop-up system: Anatomy of a Hack that I was made aware of via the Bethesda Forums from this thread here.

Sorry I couldn't reply. I was at school.

Yes! That was the exact same thing that happened to me!

It seems to have temporarily stopped, but I'm sure it will start up soon again...

I, too have been bitten by this pop-under faux virus bug! I wrote to TESNexus (I fear I may have been a bit too harsh in the email - it just happened when I wrote the email and I was still riled up!). Robin Scott was kind enough to reply and point me to this thread.

Now I know what to do (screenshot) and where to go (here) if/when it happens again...

I'm getting almost the same thing! (might be the exact same, just different version actually). Got some screenshots with my digital camera, just will need to upload/download them - tomorrow as it;s after 1am here) anyways, at the very end it wants me to download some program :wallbash: (which since I didn't ask for it and don't want it i just hit cancel) and i snagged not only a picture of it, but wrote the info down. :)

Name: A9installer_77043307.exe

Type: Application, 149KB

From: antivirushelp.com

I'll post the pics I snagged after I get up tomorrow, but hope this info helps too.

Hi XXXXX,

A very helpful user on my forums has provided five step-by-step

screenshots of the process as it happens. Other users have confirmed this

is happening to them, too. Here's the blurb he's provided:

[1] This pops up for a fraction of a second after I click somewhere on the

TESNexus site.

[2] And swiftly appears as this warning thing. I click "Cancel".

[3] and it reinitiates itself. I was speedy with the print-screen, and

manage to snag this image before the bogus warning reappeared. I swear,

that thing I captured only appeared for a microsecond.

[4] I click cancel and try to ignore the stupid thing, and it brings up

this in the background.

life visited an "adult" website).

I find these anti-spyware/anti-virus programs that report fake results in

order to get you to download their spyware infested software disgusting

and do not want them shown on my site. It's deceitful and I'm well aware

that they are getting a high profile in the US media at the moment as

several companies are currently in court for this exact thing. I'm sure

you are aware of this and I'd highly recommend to you to cease allowing

such rubbish onto your ad rotation.

I have removed your ad tags until you can confirm this ad has been removed.

Thank you for your time.

Best regards,

Robin

That evidence was great. Have a kudos point on me!

Any further evidence people wish to provide, especially on any other dodgy adverts, will be forwarded to the ad company on the same course. Thanks guys!

Thanks for taking care of it.

It was beginning to become a real pain.

Once again, :thanks:

Probably not a good idea. Try using "Alt F4" instead. Activating a malicious add can result in it activating a script - meaning bad things could happen to your computer.
