Hi-Res Texture pack causing Frame Rate drop

Sorry, but at 450 GTS is not altogether better than a 260 GTX (which is pretty low-to-medium range nowadays). No surprise you get slow-downs with the HD pack.

 

Well seeing as I've been able to run Skyrim as well as many other graphics intensive games at full settings at around 50-60 fps without issue, and Skyrim is the only game doing this, and Ctrl+alt+del doesn't clear your vram cache, it's not the graphics card.

 

And the slow downs have only started RECENTLY, I've been fine until just a few weeks ago. Read the OP plz.

My point is that it all adds up. If you only have a certain amount of video RAM, you can only have so many meshes and textures. You'll have to keep some and lose others. So, for example, if you have the polygon-heavy Apachii hair mod, you'll want to consider removing that.

My question is, if this is the case, why is this happening all of the sudden so randomly? And why does ctrl+alt+del simply fix this?

 

 

Like others have said, the hi-res causes fps drops for many people. How much time have you spent fussing with it? There are a lot of alternatives in mod-land that will give you as good or better results. I think if you looked at those you would really not miss the official ones.

 

I've been looking and haven't found a community made Hi-Res pack. Maybe I'm just not looking hard enough?

How hot is your card getting? Did you check to make sure that nothing is overheating? Going do desktop reduces the load being applied to gfx card as well as your cpu since it no longer has to display everything from the game.

That's exactly why I think it's video RAM. If it were predictable, then you'd know the reason (and you wouldn't need to complain about it here). Granted, this is just guesswork, but video RAM is the most random resource in this game. A good rule of thumb is that NPCs use a significant portion of video RAM, and NPCs are deliberately made to work in a random way.

It never does. It's at it's normal temp even when running it's hardest.

Ctrl-alt-delete (or Alt-tab or whatever) just forces the game out of d3d. Which then forces it to rebuild buffers (possibly) and thus present a more compact and/or efficient accumulation of data. This my best guess on how they use memory. Fragmentation in this game isn't as bad as others, but when they hit boundaries, I've noticed that they don't always handle it correct (as evidenced by corrupted meshes and textures you see on the console system sometimes).
