Light or Heavy Armor?

I generally play stealth-based characters, too, but you can do that without any armor at all. There's an advantage to that. At lower levels, before you can get the perk that muffles movement in light armor, your light armor still makes noise when you move.

Except for one play-through in which I played a pure tank, though, if I wear armor at all it's light and my cut-off on the armor type is leather -- mostly for esthetic reasons. I just don't like the looks of light armor that's "better" than leather, and there's really not that much difference between all the light armor types, especially if you make a career of staying out of direct combat.

Am a Stealth player....so light Armor here too and like Moraevik I don't go beyond the leathers....aside from the aesthetic factor....the glass and up really do look unrealistically too chunky and heavy to be light Armor....as for sound reduction, I often don't have my Dovahkin in a full set...two pieces at early on....later three pieces...never four.

If I'm going to wear armor at all, one of the first things I do, even before I leave Riverwood to go exploring, is to smith a full set of leather armor and upgrade it to "fine". There's really no point in not doing this, and leather armor is far superior to the fur stuff you find on bandits at that level. I then push up in the Light Armor tree for Matched Set, which makes the leather armor even better.

Honestly it depends on what I'm playing. More often than not I do heavy armor mages. Often I'll play light armor archers. Warriors are almost always heavy armor. To date I don't think I've ever played a cloth character though.

Promiser, install Way of the Monk, by Woverdude. I'm using this right now and haven't donned a shred of armor since I started the game. You'll find the new stuff in the game just before you reach the Guardian Stones on your way to Riverwood, so be sure to get the "unarmed" weapons (there's one for one-handed and two-handed) that increase your unarmed damage, your new robe, some books you'll need, and a few new monk-based weapons. There's even a pilgrimage to find all the "pillars" that can give you new abilities, sort of like the various standing stones do.

This is the best no-armor option that doesn't rely upon magic spells to boost your armor class that I know of in the game. It's a shame that the OP didn't explicitely include a "no-armor" option, but this is a valid approach to playing the game, especially if you're playing a pure mage.

It's officially on my list of "Next Play Through" mods. However I kind of enjoy the idea of heavy armored mages. Really fund for me personally. My biggest gripe with armors and weapons is Bethesda cutting the skills every new game. I played Morrowind to death simply because it was pretty easy to make a sturdy character how you wanted them. With Oblivion and later Skyrim, there was less customization, which was rather disappointing for me... If I knew more about modding, I'd start my own mod that reintroduces things like pikes, medium armors, a difference between axes, maces, and swords, and even incorporated unique perks for each. But alas... I am a newb at such things and get very intimated by the constant error messages I get when opening the CK =/

Neither. Armor is too slow and noisy regardless of type, 99% of my kills are one hit, don't need it.

I was gonna use the Ebony Mail but to my surprise it was actually the worst stealth armor possible. Not only it's classified as Heavy Armor for some reason, but those stupid poison effects also block vision (it's a pain to use a bow with that thing) and I always have to take it off when I brawl cause otherwise the guards get umad at me.
