Vandrath
Im new to texturing (just got Photoshop) and was wondering what are the methods used by artists to get these amazing textures I see around the Nexus. Im talking the scratch effects and inner glow effects etc. When I texture it always seems so bland and non vibrant. I know there is a lot to learn and I wont learn it all in 1 day or even one year. Im curious as to what methods people on the nexus use because you guys have some epic textures.
doctorhr2
The glows and scratch effects are all done with maps. To get a handle on this, Google will really be your best friend. Depending on the modelling software you have, just start looking for tutorials on Diffuse, Normal/Bump maps and they'll really go into it. Also, if you have just got photoshop and you want to texture for Skyrim, make sure you have the Photoshop DDS plug in as this is the only file format it recognises. Vandrath
Mudbox (video tutorial p2 in my signature) :D Whats the difference between Mudbox and Photoshop? Is it just different developers making the same type of product but with different layouts and code?
ghosu
Watch a random video on youtube for each program and you will instantly see the difference :D PS is an image editor to create images and edit photos.Mudbox is a 3D sculpting & painting tool to paint directly on the 3D model and save the whole thing as texture. And create/sculpt layers with more details and save 'em as a normal map to simulate the details on a low polygon model...and other maps for shine effects and whatever. I watched your 4 part tutorial this afternoon and found it really interesting. As someone with more experience in this area, would you say that Mudbox is a better tool for texturing than UV Mapping and texturing in PS? I have a bad imagination so it's quite hard for me to find the correct position of a 3D model on a flat 2D texture...so painting it would take a while. Using 3D software you can paint directly on the 3D model, much easier (for me)
Perraine
It's WAAYYY more difficult to edit textures in 2D I agree but ... Mudbox is like $1000 for a license and Gimp or Paint.net are free ... Do the math ...
