Dianadoesitbest
I have been having an issue. Whenever I try to travel to Windhelm and the outlying area, there seems to be an issue. The game will Crash, or Freeze. And when trying to load up a save or auto save within a certain distance of the city, I get the endless loading screen. Apparently many people are having the exact same issue almost down to point. I am thinking there is something wrong in the area. Something that really needs to be patched. After scouring various forums and topics it seems this problem is happening to a lot of people, and have tried various fixes. and work around. They don't always work for everyone however. And some of the more successful work arounds, require alt-tabbing, hitting the windows key several times, etc. It seems that the area is not PC exclusive either, but is across all platforms and corrupts saves. The issue isn't mod related either as people running vanilla in various updated stages and people with anywhere between 1-200 mods are having the same issue. It's not PC gear either as the issue happens to people with rigs ranging from low end on low settings to high end on ultra settings and anywhere inbetween. I really think as a community it would be great if we could figure out what exactly is wrong in windhelm. This is a very game breaking issue. and I think it effects enough people. Personally I am really sick of this kind of stuff from Bethesda. It's not our job to fix these kind of things.
CrabbyLobster
I agree. If I had any programing skill I'd help.
Georgiegril
Well, I think there are several things that are going on: 1) the high contrast (lots of white, black river, etc) and animation take a lot of graphics memory to render.2) There is also a fairly high number of NPCs and creature spawning in that area, taking both graphics and CPU. That is in the vanilla game. Add to that mods that add even more creatures, NPC's, more of anything (plants, snow, etc.) and/or higher resolution textures, graphical enhancements..... it is a crash waiting to happen, at least for those of us who don't have monster gaming rigs. I don't consider it Bethesda's fault that they want to push the game's visuals as far as they can, and certainly don't fault anyone for making mods that try to push it even further. I would rather find ways to conserve my computers resources where I can (like decreased particles) and using mods that fit my computer's abilities (no ENB for me! No SkyMo either, alas...) If your game is crashing around Windhelm, it is possible to identify the problem and probably find ways to avoid future crashes, although it takes time because it is caused by the game reacting with the specific combination of variables from your computer components/settings and mods that you are using. And the solution may require you to give up a mod, or lower a setting....
blitzen
Hmmm. I don't ever have that problem. Whiterun, especially around the brewery, is a consistent problem for me though. I stopped walking to Whiterun a while back. The only time I had a problem with Windhelm was when I installed a mod that added several frost giants just outside the stables. I have close to 250 mods active right now. Windhelm doesn't crash at all. Maybe one of the mods is somehow fixing that problem by replacing a bad mesh, or something like that.
