Hi all,

I realise that this has most likely been posted all over the net but so far nothing has helped me. randomly while playing skyrim i will get a crash to desktop. no error, no freezing, no indication its about to happen. could be after 2 mins, could be after 2 hours. the only patterns i have seen so far but have not confirmed are that in the current place i am exploring when a dragur deathlord comes out then it chrashes :S (weird i know which is why i said not confirmed lol) i tried TCL and ran to a different part of the dungeon and for a while it didnt crash till i saw another one....

I also have never had a crash while the pause menu is up.

ive tried windowed mode, changing the shadows to low, running in a different compatibility mode, checking that all mods are ticked while subscribed, ive run skyrim directly from the launch button in programs but that crashes in title screen.

Really at my wits end here.

im a bit of a noob so please help and be kind lol

specs of my PC are:

CPU

Intel Pentium E5200 @ 2.50GHz

Wolfdale 45nm Technology

RAM

6.00 GB Dual-Channel DDR2 @ 333MHz

Motherboard

Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. EP35-DS3 (Socket 775)

Graphics Card

NVIDIA GeForce GT 640

Operating system is the windows 8 release preview

I have a feeling that this could be the issue and its just not compatible.

The game is a 32 bit application and can only use a maximum of 4G of RAM no matter how much you have. This is a hard limit and cannot be changed.

More help

This is updated often so come back later for more.

If you use any of this and have some success - or even if nothing works - please post back here what you did that worked or didn't work. That kind of information can be invaluable to other members having the same or similar problems - And to me in fixing any problems in the blog.

sorry couldnt find any fixes there. ive noticed though that when i first start the game after the computer has been turned on, the first crash always has the Steam news popup after it crashes. but every other time after that the news isnt there. i think my computer might just be temperamental lol

You can run steam in offline mode, that will help with the update related crashes.

Make sure you have turned off all other applications, like internet browser. Turn off all unneeded services/processes, especially autoupdates, IM, cloud sync, and external hard drive. You can try a app that does that like gamebooster if you are uncertain how to do it yourself, although I find game boosting apps take up as much memory as they claim to save. They will prevent scheduled tasks from kicking in mid-game and taking up all your memory.

You can run something like CPU-Z to see how your memory is being used in game.

You may also want to use a program to monitor your GPU--if your card is overheating, that will cause a crash, as well.
