Suggested Mods?

Recommended Posts

If this isn't the place to post this please move it to where it should go but I just wanted to get some recommendations on the thousands of mods on here.

I played Skyrim when it first came out, I know I got the Special Edition now and I was wanting to play this and try to get these mods to work as I didn't use any the 1st time through

I was wondering what mods are like the must have mods that make the game better?

Thanks!

I suggest you to read the modding guide published on Nexus and other sites. Below are just a few examples of guides on Nexus.

YASHed Guide

The Phoenix Flavour - A Modular Modding Guide for Skyrim SE

The Phoenix Flavour - Modding guide list

After reading a few guides, you should be able to see the mods and trends that should be installed.

Good luck :)

Be aware that even though "most endorsed" is a reasonable place to start, it isn't necessarily a reliable indicator.

Some mods have high endorsements mainly because they've been around a long time. But many of them have been abandoned by their authors, and some have known bugs or incompatibilities that will never be addressed.

Conversely, newer mods may not make the "most endorsed" list because of their newness, even though they're more likely to be actively supported.

Make your wish list and then read the Posts tabs on each of them. There you'll read about ongoing problems, user reviews, and attaboys. Check to see if the mod author has made any posts recently; if not, that's a bad sign.

Going through this research, you will run across certain mod authors who are held in especially high regard. If I see anything by MihailMods, for example, i'll not hesitate to grab it.

Unless you're going to use someone else's curated mod list, build it slowly. Start with the things least likely to impact performance or have compatibility issues, such as texture replacers (e.g. Static Mesh Improvement, Immersive Armors). Turn on the framerate monitor so you can see whether a mod is slowing you down or not.

What's "essential" is very much a personal thing, but here are a few off the top of my head that I consider truly essential because many other mods depend on them.

  • SkyUI
  • FNIS
  • CBBE
  • XP32
  • SSE Engine Fixes

Non-essential, but personal favorites:

  • Immersive Sounds
  • Realistic Water 2
  • Vivid Weathers
  • Violens
  • JK's Skyrim
  • KS Hairdos
  • Flower Girls
  • Immersive Wenches
  • Diverse Dragons
  • Immersive Patrols
  • Hammet's Dungeon Pack
  • More Bandit Camps
  • Simple NPC Outfit Manager
  • EasierRider's Dungeon Pack

I delved into things last night and got completely confused really quick.

I am using the Vortex thing to install these mods and everything seemed easy up until I tried figuring out what SKSE is and where I get it from cause theirs one on the Workshop and then theirs like one that has its own page.

I don't know what I do with this? and then the FNIS thing like it says I have to install the game outside a hard drive for it to work? or something along those lines

I havnt even gotten to the CBBE thing which is for bodies I believe and the ones below that I havnt seen =)

Is their a order on what you should download and install 1st cause Like I started with the high def graphics.

Modding is a very time-consuming process; a short description won't cover all the details.
For each mod (especially for those like FNIS and XPMSSE) read the full nexus description page, learn the requirements, and study provided tutorials.

Here is the order that you want to install these particular mods in (If you want to use them all):

SKSE64 https://skse.silverlock.org/
RaceMenu https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/19080
FNIS https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/3038
XPMSSE https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/1988
CBBE https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/198

If you are interested in only improving graphics, the last four aren't really needed, but I highly suggest you at least get SKSE64 and Racemenu. They are core mods that many others require, and generally are just awesome to have for purposes of extended functionality and character customization.

Installing SKSE64 is actually super simple, here are some really short guides:
