Dishonored. Mods?

If it is using the ue3 couldn't you use the ureal editor or UDK?

Not that I know of. Some additional content might be able to be made or formatted, but most of the stuff related to a game tends to be encrypted in a format which cannot be opened in such a development kit.

I extracted the game and took a look at it's files.

Textures are .tgm format, so theres no problem ;)

The tricky thing is that all textures are painted so it's hard to replace them with other textures...

Another thing i found out is that Arkane used 3DS Max for their models etc, so this shouldn't be a problem too.

Anyways, I already optimized about 3000 Textures atm...but it's a long way to the end ;)

So texture mods are a go, at least, for the game?

It's based on UE3 so there should be no problem ;)

But I'm a little afraid of repacking the files...

Does anyone know a good way to repack instead of using UDK?

No. That's a misconception that a lot of people have. You can't use the UDK to modify games. Each game needs it own editor.

That's correct, but you can pack files into ".upk" packages with udk.

Sadly umodel doesn't extract all the files from the ".upk" packages so there's no possibility to repack anything.

I guess the only option is to wait for mod tools...but Bethesda already said they have no plans about that :(

Textures are usually the first step towards modding a game, but much more than that would likely require official modding tools. If enough people pester Arkane for those tools, I'm sure they'll plan it in sometime. However, they will likely want a bit of a break after launch of the game, so anything beyond major bug fixes will probably have to wait.

The only other way for modding to take off is if a fan can make an unofficial tool or tools. Many kinds of tools can be made, large or small, and can build up to something quite comprehensive, but more knowledge about the engine's programming would be necessary. A texture-replacer tool or a hex-editor to change simple values would be a start. If user-generated modding were to really get interesting, however, an intermediary tool, AKA a modder's resource, would likely be needed.

The UDK might not be usable to modify the game as it is, but perhaps a plugin or mod for the UDK can be made to interface with Dishonored's data. Or, perhaps, the same can be done to a modding tool from another UE3 game.

Above all, though, it would be nice to have some central location for discussion about dishonored mods beyond a single thread. Perhaps a sub-forum.

I blindly posted not really understandings mods, thinking about the Gears of war editor then realizing that dishonored and GoW are different games. The GoW editor is a modified version of UnrealEd which is used to create levels as said in
by lead level designer Jim Brown of Epic Games. Tool used to make customs maps not actually adding anything new besides another map to play on. More info on how to use the GoW editor found here http://forums.epicgames.com/threads/583707-Tutorials-Epic-and-other-Gears-of-War-editor-tutorials.
