Custom NPC creation.

I've been modding Skyrim since it came out in 2011. I've created MANY mods over the years for both Oldrim and SSE. However they've all been simple mods like custom player homes, generic NPCs, followers, marriage options, gameplay tweaks, etc. All stuff I could create with the CK and no other tools.

I've tried for YEARS to make a detailed custom NPC, such as creating one with Racemenu, mod hair, mod eyes, highly detailed setup.

I've NEVER been able to get it to work.

I've read EVERY single tutorial on the web, NOTHING works. They ALL fail or are grotesquely generic like "use nifskope to re-assign texture links" with absolutely no instructions how.

I'm starting to think it's impossible.

I'm giving it one more try this year, (last try was two years ago) before I give up for good.

Here's what I want to do:

I want a custom follower.

I want the follower in Skyrim Special Edition.

I want to design their looks with Racemenu.

I want to use mod hair and eyes with custom hair colors.

That's all! People are uploading fully custom followers all the time and there are ABSOLUTELY NO INSTRUCTIONS WHATSOEVER how to do it!

I don't need instructions on how to make a follower, I can do that in my sleep. I just need to find out how to design their looks/hair/eyes, etc

Does ANYONE know how to do this?

First of all: You will have to work on an "Oldrim" basis and convert the follower to SE later. At least that's the only working "pipeline" I know of.

The main reason why I recommend working in Skyrim LE first is that you need a program called "nifmerge" in the process. And AFAIK, there's no version of "nifmerge" for SE. So you'll hit a brick wall here.

To get started, install Skyrim LE and get a tutorial/guide about making a follower.

There are dozens of them. This one's a "classic":

You can also google for "Make a follower kit" by AsherZ. Basically this is a "prebuilt" esp file for followers, that you only need to "fill in" with your assets. It used to be on the Nexus, but AFAIK was moved to the author's personal site. A quick search will tell you.

Absolutely superb.

I had it about 2/3 correct but its the little things that made the difference.

Followed the method and it worked like a charm. Even worked on a custom race, custom hair, custom eyes, tattoos, everything.

I wasn't planning on using her pre-made follower template but she already created all the follower body parts, meshes and links in the CK file so it was easier.

I only wish I had that video 4 years ago.

Appreciate the help!

Holy Crap! Now I know why there's a lack of Companions/Followers for SSE. AND, why most of the ones there is are converted from oldrim. Nice to glean a bit of info like this on occasion. ;)

The only problem I can tell from Skyla's method is that if you use her template, it has all the CK ID's with a generic name like "AAA_GirlFeet" and such. I think the IDs will all need to be re-named if you wish to have multiple followers all created with her method or they would likely conflict with each other.

It's easy enough though. Before customizing the template for your follower, just rename everything starting with "AAA_" to something unique for your follower like "TPSKaylee_"

Otherwise it works beautifully. A little tweaking here and there for different eye and hair mods but works great!

Yep. That's something you always have to do if you want to create multiple followers. In fact, preparing the esp for a follower feels a bit like stupid office work... Nothing you can do about it.

But glad you got it working now. Have fun!

  • 7 months later...

there is a way you can do this on oldrim without needing any extra programs by customizing your player character and then opening console and typing SavePcFace Name. "Name" being the name you picked for your character. after this is done, in your skyrim folder you will find whats called a .npc file, keep it there. open creation kit and make an npc in the npc menu. then open the npc, open charactergenparts. click import and click your .npc file.
