Vortex Issue

I keep receiving the following error: "Vortex needs access to "C:\Users\(myPCusername)\Fallout4Custom.ini.baked" but doesn't have permission to. If your account has admin rights (I do, as the only user on the PC) Vortex can try to unlock it for you." Whenever I click "Give Permission", I'm meet with the same error screen. Clicking "Retry" does nothing at all. I have no other option but to click on "Cancel". I looked up "Fallout4Custom.ini.baked" and some Steam users were able to point out that is was a Vortex-created file so I'm not sure what to do.

Had all the same issues you did I figured it out though. Turns out that file says it has an unknown owner or something like that Which means it doesn't recognize your computer or any account you have as being able to change or even delete it. I figured out how to fix it on my end go into setting on Vortex under the first tab their that being the interface tab go and enable advanced mode then get out of the settings and go to where you enable your mods their should be an option near the Top called Purge Mods hit that button accept the warning and purge them. That will get rid of Fallout4custom.ini.baked file as well as the other .baked files don't worry about that. Then just launch Fallout 4 without any mods and get to the main menu and you can just quit to the desktop then you should have you can enable all your mods without issue again. The .baked file is a vortex created file so don't worry about it reappearing in that folder. The issue was when it said an unknown person owned it. I checked it after i did all that and showed my username as the owner again so that seems to have been the issue. Took me 3 hours of trying everything but found this fix by myself google was useless this time. I hope this helps you :)

A lot of those ini files can be set to read only, by some of the tools that we use for this game.

The first thing to do, is check the properties of the file in question. Right Click on the .baked file, and a gray window will pop open. Look towards the bottom of it. If it says Read Only with a check (tick) next to it, uncheck the box, then click apply, ok.

Another thing to do, is to make SURE that you have access to that file on your account. Windows can get screwy about that. Especially windows10, if you don't have an activated version of the operating system, or it was upgraded from an older version of windows, like 7 or 8. https://www.online-tech-tips.com/computer-tips/set-file-folder-permissions-windows/

Heyas Daniel. Give this a try. See if windows will let you copy and paste that file. Open the folder that it's in, right click on it and choose Copy.

Then go to your desktop, right click in an empty space on the desktop and choose Paste.

If windows will allow you to do that, then right click on the copy of the file, and see if you can change the permissions there. If so, then click apply.

Now comes the tricky part. Right click on the new one again and choose to copy it.

Then try to paste it back in your regular folder, and see if windows will prompt you to over write or replace the file. If so choose yes.

If it will not allow you to copy the file, then you have something wrong with your admin account, as windows sees it.

This could be resolved by creating a second admin account.

OR

If you have that windows activation notification that shows up all the time down in the lower right hand screen of the monitor, then windows is blocking you because it doesn't see your copy of windows as being activated.
