Steam can not start Oblivion with OBSE anymore (I am already hours into the game)

Hi there, I come here since 2010 and never really had a reason to ask here for help before.

My game is quite modded and I used to start it by clicking the play-button in Steam. Since yesterday, I get only a black screen for two seconds and that's it. I have a lot of mods and about a hundred of them are actual plugins. The game worked fine until the day before yesterday. Saved game, exited Oblivion. Now I can't start it up anymore.

I have the 4 GB patch and Wrye Bash - in this combination the play-button in Steam is the best option to start the game else it might not load OBSE.

Strangely enough the game loads if I am clicking the Launcher or something else but like I said no support for OBSE then. It is easy to see if OBSE is not loaded because the writings in the start up screen is all wrong.

I am sure I did NOT change anything with my mods but it doesn't work anymore. Playing on without OBSE is NOT an option.

What I know for sure is: when I use the 4 GB patch the best option is to start it up with Steam - the Launcher (and OBSE support) won't work when I use Wrye Bash or OBMM to start the game from.

I've googled a lot and found different versions of the problem why OBSE won't load but mine worked fine until it suddenly didn't.

Configuration:

Win 10 (Steam is on drive H)

NVIDIA GeForce 1060 6 GB

AMD ~3GH x6

I would be grateful if someone will have an insight why the game in combination with Steam suddenly plays dead.

To clear this up: I found the culprit.

But AFTER I copied a new game folder, moved the mods, installed Wrye Bash anew and activated everything.

I wrote "I am sure I did NOT change anything..." - Well, I did, but changed it back... the thing was: the back changing didn't work, and I was left with a bunch of shaders, which still looked the same, but weren't. Oblivion Reloaded really hated it and everything went to hell.

Same stuff happened again (of course...) but this time I knew instantly what happened and copied the original files back.

Stupid mistake cost me a whole day, but problem solved.

  • 2 months later...

I was able to load Oblivion with OBSE through steam both with an install of the game from DVD and even with the version bought at GOG. Must say I haven't got a version bought through Steam and that I have to add the loader to my Steam list as a non-steam game.
