GunnerofLife
I know it increases the difficulty throughout the game, but how much? Will it overwhelm me? Should I bring companions? Is the treasure/reward even worth it?! Please tell me.
wetblanket
Simple question, complicated answer. OOO is a true overhaul in that it changes many aspects of the game (I don't use it anymore for that reason, preferring a selection of small focused gameplay mods instead). Difficulty is increased somewhat but that isn't it's main reason for being and you can always adjust the difficulty slider to suit yourself. Assuming you've played vanilla long enough then reading the OOO doc's ought to be sufficient to let you know what you are in for.
Hickory
On top of what wetblanket has said, the new quests, locations, NPCs and items all make it worth it, if that's what you're after. I never play Oblivion without OOO. If/when you install it, you'll think you are playing a different game before long.
GunnerofLife
The main question is still not answered. How hard is OOO? Let's say I leave the difficulty bar at 40%. How hard would it be? Would I need companions?
Hickory
As hard as you want it to be -- the question has been answered. You are asking for 'yes/no' answer where none exists. Wetblanket's first four words sums it up. If that is not to your liking, then...
wetblanket
Just in case you don't know, unlike most games the difficulty can be adjusted at any time. So start playing and adjust as necessary.

So start playing and adjust as necessary. I'm well aware. I'm just asking because my friend installed OOO and got gangbanged by a group of Dremora. The slider was on 40% at the time. If it is as hard as he described it, I just want to prepare myself first.

I'll just play the safe side and bring a whole nation of companions. By the way, is it true that OOO fixes the "enemy levels up with you" gripe? Hickory
By the way, is it true that OOO fixes the "enemy levels up with you" gripe? Again, this is a yes AND no answer. It is true that OOO 'reduces' the effect, in that most bandits will remain in fur, leather, iron, steel gear, but you will also find new enemies in unique, powerful gear. What you will NOT find is all bandits running around in Daedric gear, if that's what you mean.
