Trying to resolve mod conflicts and strangeness

Ok here the deal I've been slowly picking up mods for about a month and after just recently getting hearthfire received my first crash upon load...

I proceeded to root out 3 mods that were not hearthfire compatable and updated or removed them and the crash stopped, but I noticed I couldn't build the first home I was given as a quest, dawnstar's #3 byohhouse I then worked my way through from removing all and slowly re-adding my mods and pluggins until I rooted out another that when removed let me build up to the small house sort of consistant enough to get everything to build without having to reload from pervious more then maybe 2 times, then I deside I wanted to make the house bigger and besides not being able to build the damn mainhall exterior parts, because the interior sure is there, even with no mods (chalk it up as a hearthfire bug) does thend to break immersion.

So having half my house in a temporal nowhere I desided to see if this was just my save buggered, started up a new save, watched the into and due to having scenic carages from pre hearthfire it desides to go and flip the wagon, shoot the wagon into a spiral vortex of terror and generally just not get through the damn thing, after I dont even know how many tries and how much console working (appearently the timing is also off as well because it takes several minutes for people to do parts in the script and alsuin shows up like 5 minutes after they thow me on the block and let me get back up) I finally get to the scripted character scene (because I appearently cant figure out how to get to through without it besides calling it up with the console but thats not the point) get in to the character menu and see a pair of races that are both almelexia and both buggered hardcore (I dont have new race mods I detest the races people deside to add) so no idea where those came from, go in and besides that and a few racial custom tints and such seams well enough... get through from there to outside and then proceed to dawnstar and console up some quest completes and (although I'm not sure how to properly trigger the hearthfire quests) get the letter and expect the jarl to act like normal and sell me the house... he doesnt so I peace out and try to get the quest to go past that and to the go to the land part, no dice cant figure out how hearthfire quests are worked, figure at this point it doesnt matter anymore and tellyport to all the hearthfire location and recieve a crash at I think falcreath or whatever one is marked as spot 1...

Story aside, can someone more skilled (or not, I'd take anyone) help me figure out what is doing what in the following list? Some I could fix on my own if I could figure out where they come from.

Given the first thing I noticed is that that isn't a BOSS mod list, I assume you aren't using it and it may help you. (It sorts your mods to a good load order [for instance, the Unofficial Patches should be right above the .esms for best compatibility], although you still have to tweak, and it can help you find conflicts and out-of-date mods).

I'm having trouble figuring out what exactly the problem is that you were wanting to find, since your story is full of problems, so I'm going to guess all of them ^^; Any problems in Helgen would probably be resolved by not activating any mods until after you get out onto the road to Riverwood; Helgen is really touchy with all the scripting, and things tend to break it, as you've seen.

About the custom races that you didn't intentionally download, I'm thinking that if you have installed a follower mod they might well have come with it (although I don't think I see any). It must have come with some NPC in another mod somewhere.

And finally about all the problems with Hearthfire, have you deactivated all mods completely and made a clean save and tried? I saw that you tried up there in the second paragraph, but that was I'm guessing on a save that had already started the quests with mods active, and it's always possible that made a difference, with something left over.

your description of what happened when you tried a new game reminds me of some things that happened to me when I had too many mods installed. (Note that it was too many mods for my system to handle). If everything worked fine BEFORE adding Hearthfire then I'd suggest removing enough mods to compensate for the amount of added content.

However, there are several mods which have spawns in and around the points where the Hearthfire houses are located. Some may be documented regarding this, others possibly not. So you may want to test a new game without any mods that add in new spawns. If that still fails to work, cut back on the number of texture mods.

Utilize BOSS to get your mods into a decent load order, be sure to read up on and manually place any mods that BOSS doesn't know how to sort. Tho steam mods unfortunately don't follow proper load order as they stay in your subscribed order. I would almost recommend finding the Nexus equivalent to many of those mods.

I'd also suggest (and this does get tedious) to reboot your computer between sessions just to ensure that the computer's memory & caches are fully flushed. sometimes stuff does remain between game sessions, not stuff that would affect specific game play but stuff that would affect memory usage and thus screw up game play

-- my 2 cents

Just to second Ishara's excellent advice...I(and Ankh's too ) would go beyond "almost" recommending using the nexus for all of your mods. Because workshop mods update automatically, you can suddenly find yourself with crashes due to mod conflicts because the new version is not compatible with your game...and you might not have even noticed that particular mod got updated. And with the workshop, you can't go back to the older version that was working for you.
