Dogmeat you get at a scrapyard somewhere north of Megaton. I don't recall the exact location, but you can get him to follow you just be being nice to him. Jericho, one of the citizens of Megaton, will join you for 1000 caps, but you have to an evil character. If you are good, or even neutral, he won't join you.

There are others (at least two, from what I gather) but I don't know what is involved in getting them, as I have yet to do so. As I said, though, you can only have Dogmeat and one NPC at a time.

Also, they can die, which is kind of a pain in the ass if you are ambushed. I've had to reload saves more than once because of this.

Dogmeat is tougher than you will ever be. I swear, that dog is made out of steel.

He'll take on two super mutants with miniguns at point blank range and survive.

Toss him a stimpack in hard battles, and he'll be fine. You can also trade a few stims to your human(or otherwise) companion and they'll use them in combat if it gets hairy.

They're all generally quite tough, so their survival is not really that big of an issue, usually.

If you're evil, go with Clover, the masochistic melee maniac, and give her a suit of power armour and a Shishkebab. She's insane in more ways than one.

If you're good, get Fawkes. He'll kill things faster than you, and you won't even have to equip him.

If you're neutral, get.. well, I'm not very good at fence sitting, so I've never been neutral, but you could always get Charon. He's pretty tough.

If you've never had Dogmeat die, then you are either really lucky, or I'm just incredibly unlucky. And so is my friend. Because Dogmeat has died plenty in our games. I will admit to having never hired the other people because I prefer to solo it. Dogmeat is okay because he usually stays out of the way and only helps. However, when he runs head first into a man firing rockets while two others shoot at him with combat shotguns on one side, and a huge robot sets him on fire from the other, I have to wonder if he's possibly suicidal.

Charon is a tank and is quite mean with is combat shotty. i swear he snipes with that thing. you can "acquire" him from Azragul in underworld

Jericho will join you if you are evil. havent teamed up with him though. wanders around megaton

one of the paladins from the BoS will join you (not sure on reqs) she is inside the citidel

outside the the RobCo factory is a guy that will sell you a RL-3 robot for 1000 caps if you are neutral

Fawkes was mentioned im not sure if you have to be good, but if you are nice to him in vault 87 he may join you regardless (anyone know if he wont?)

there may be more

Dogmeat turns into Dogmeat all the time... he dies way too often for me. I just make him wait forever in my player home.

I generally dislike having followers anyway. It may just be me, but I find they love to jump in front of your targets and soak up all the bullets when using VATS.

Fawkes does pack some serious firepower though... I'd assume he would be the toughest of all companions.
