mewarmonger
Ok, everything has been updated. I'm no longer getting any error messages. But when I try to start the game with the SKSE64 loader, nothing happens. It acts like it's going to start and then....pfft. Nothing
anjenthedog
Anything that is dependent on SKSE (a specific version) is also going to need to be updated. Back in June, I think I had to update around two or three dozen other mods (in addition to the Skyrim executable update and SKSE) before the game worked. Funny thing is, I run with Steam in offline mode, and yet the day this update was released, my game no longer works after almost five months of problem free operation. (half of June, and all of July, August, September, and October, and then the past couple weeks of November prior to 1.5.97 release (still on 1.5.80, 2.0.16) Can this game be purchased in a way that I can avoid using Steam? This is the second time they've shoved an unrequested pole up my rear. I think another $55 would be a good investment, considering that my time is more precious than the cost of the game, which is in the end less than an hour of my professional time
wfandrews
If you are using SKSE64 2_00_17 you probably have some mods that have not been updated to the newer SKSE64. There will not be any error messages that I know of by any of the mod tools informing you of a mod that needs SKSE64_16 and has not been updated. I believe there is a mod that informs you of which mods in your load order are reliant on SKSE64 but I do not think it tells you which version of SKSE64 the mod needs. You are probably going to have to use the old time consuming method of starting a new game, adding some mods a few at a time, launch the game, see if it launches, if it does add some more mods, and so on. This is the second time they've shoved an unrequested pole up my rear. I think another $55 would be a good investment, considering that my time is more precious than the cost of the game, which is in the end less than an hour of my professional time I had the exact same experience back in June. Apparently, Steam and Bethesda got wise to our defensive measures and figured out a way to defeat them. It took me a month to track down every SKSE-dependent mod and either update them or remove them if no update was available. After that, I made backup copies of SkyrimSE.exe and SkyrimSELauncher.exe. When I saw the message that Skyrim was being updated, I didn't panic - just renamed those two files and made copies of my backups, and I was back in business. Note that this is not a forever fix. Eventually I'll install some new mod that requires the new version of SKSE, and I'll have no choice but to go through the whole process again. One tool that might help is this script that lists all your SKSE-dependent mods: https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/30387 I didn't have that tool last time and had to do the same thing manually, painstakingly listing every mod folder that had a DLL in it, which most of the time means it talks to SKSE. LeddBate
While having to wait for SKSE (and the relevant mods) to update is frustrating, there is an alternative to avoid this in the future. Skyrim.exe Auto-Backup. It installs like any other mod and will create a copy of the current Skyrim executable file. Next time Bethesda updates, just fish the exe file from the folder the mod created and replace the new executable with it. Now you can just keep right on playing. Be sure to save the new exe file in a convenient folder. When SKSE and your relevant mods update (and you want to use them because of cool new features) just put the newer Skyrim executable back in. This avoids having to verify your game cache and creating tons of problems when all the files you altered over months of modding get set back to default. JRCosta
As other said, SKSE mods should/must be updated to the new SE version, and only a trial and error checkup will help you find the culprit. In my situation, the "Are You There Mod" is the one. Take a look at your modlist and check the discussions of the non-updated SKSE mods you have. wfandrews
One way I avoid all this is to check "Only update when game is launched" and play offline, launching thru SKSE64. That way you can keep n playing until you want to upgrade.
