exe, launcher, esm and Interface.ba2 gone

Just a heads up.

I left my rig running overnight and when I woke up this morning, steam was doing something, for lack of a better word. I didn't give it much thought, terminated the process.

But later on I decided on playing FO4 for a bit. The first thing I noticed was that my F4SE icon on my desktop was gone. So I checked my installation folder and discovered with disgust that my exe, the launcher, the esm and the Interface.ba2 were gone also.

It's not a big problem for me, since I always have a backup containing all these files and all I had to do was replacing them in the installation folder. But something was messing with my rig and my installation big time. As in making the game unplayable unless you surrender to the latest update.

Did Steam update FO4? I know a recent patch came out this week and Beth has added new content to the Content Creation Club which may have borked many mods you have installed. So mod authors will need to update their plugins again

No, it didn't. I make it my business to only start using F4SE and have steam set to only update when game is started. It was also the first thing I checked in the data folder. No CC crap in there. I always delete that bloatware whenever I actually do an update.

No, just as I said: It deleted all the files being necessary to actually play the game. The exe, the launcher, the esm and the Interface.ba2. Probably to make me "an offer I can't refuse", to speak with the Godfather. In order to make me actually surrender to the pending update.

cossayos- While I would honestly like to believe that Bethesda is pulling something equalling a dirty trick by Microsoft, I think the problem with the missing files is more to the fact that you interrupted the process.

NOT sure of the specifics. Such as how their protocols work, and all the technical stuff. But, I DO know that when getting updates forced down your throat for this game on the consoles, if you stop the DL before it's finished, you HAVE to start it ALL OVER AGAIN, when you try to restart the game. Meaning that for consoles, it will delete the update files, if it cannot complete the installation of them. I'm theorizing that this is what happened to you.

Now, as to HOW steam started that update on your system again....that's something that I'd really like to know. I've literally been disabling my wifi on my laptop every time I start this game since the night before the update.

I don't actually have it installed on this box. It's on my other laptop. Do you want to do a test? Go into the security settings for the steam launcher in the fallout folder, and set it so that nothing on your system can access the steamlauncher exe? To see if that will cause any kind of errors, when booting up the game?

Possibly. But steam had no business updating in the first place. It was in offline mode, with the setting "only update when game is started".
