GrumyOldMan
I was discussing buying and installing Skyrim in a popular gaming store. During the discussion the guy working at the store said that I had to be logged onto the internet and into STEAM just to play the game by myself. So I looked at him and said, "You are telling me that after I install STEAM and then install the game from a Disc I purchase at a store that I cannot play the game on my computer without constantly being logged onto STEAM the entire time I'm playing?" He said that was correct. I then said, "So you're saying that I don't just have to log in each time I play and they verify every time I play that I'm not playing with a bootleg disc, but that I cannot play at all unless I'm constantly connected to STEAM?" He said that was correct. I would like to know from those who play on a pc if this is true. I realize I have to install STEAM in order to install the game to prove I'm not playing a bootleg copy of the game but I cannot believe that after I do that I must be logged into STEAM the entire time I'm playing the game on my pc every time I play the game. JanusForbeare
He was wrong. You only need to be connected to Steam to validate the game and download updates (if you want them). Once you've validated the game online, you can simply set Steam to offline mode, and play without being connected. Steam will still boot up when you start the game, but won't connect in offline mode. CasperTheLich
that would be correct. i have to be plugged into steam while i'm playing. i do find it overly intrusive & annoying, but there’s not much I can do about it. ---edit---He was wrong. JanusForbeare
There is. I've been using it since 1.8 came out. Just click on the "Steam" dropdown menu, and it'll be the second option. RitualBlack
I can also confirm what JanusForbeare is saying. I just testing it about 1 min ago and worked fine in offline mode. If you don't like steam you can just leave it offline and play skyrim the way you would any other game.
MiloHunts
Confirmed twice, just went offline and it works fine
Deleted3507349User
I also always play in offline mode. I don't want Steam to update anything unless I specifically go online to allow it.
GrumyOldMan
Thank you for the help. I have dial up internet service and a 56k modem that on a good day connects at a whopping 44k. I could not see any logical reason to spend $60 bucks on a game that I could only play if I was connected to the internet. That is why I wanted to know before I bought it. I appreciate the input. Lawlacaust
Just need to be online for it to validate the game for first time and to download patches. Some newer games like Diablo 3 you need to be online ALL the time i hate that crap.
CarlCorey
I have Steam set to "offline" mode AND I have my firewall instructed to block any traffic from steam.exe. No problems. Historically, all I've had to do is turn off the firewall when I wanted updates -- Steam graciously ignored my "offline" setting -- maybe that's better now but I'm not changing my habits.
