So I've finally faced the fact that my CPU is complete ****, X2 4000+ @ 2.1ghz and Im going to buy a new one this is my setup

ATI 4850 512mb

2gig 800mhz DDR2 ram

80gig 7200HDD

M2V-MX mobo

and the rest aren't that important,

so as you can see im being bottlenecked by a more powerful GPU, I could buy the most powerful things if i wanted to, but my parents will be on my *** faster than you can finish your posts im 15 so don't laugh.

So Im aiming for a AM2 socket with thats not gonna leave a 3 digit value when my bank statement comes in, but im wondering what Speed would be appropriate for my video card and oblivion.

PS. Please don't say ZOMG N00B GO BUY TEH INTEL QUADCORE @ 40000ghz!

You are a bit bottlenecked by the MoBo too, before choosing the CPU you must be aware it being limited at 95W, most dual core shall fit under that spec and shall not be a problem. Another history would be the phenom CPUs, I don't know if that mobo can have the BIOS updated to support them.

Once granted the best multi core option you can use, the choice will be easy, aways the faster one that fits the MoBo's specifications and the budget you reserved to invest in it.

Edit: your videocard is very appropriated to play most nowadays games. And for Oblivion almost all Athlon x2 are enough to keep a steady FPS even at resolutions like 1680 x 1050 and some AA and AF.

Games like Crysis with intensive physics processing will demand more CPU power. Anything near 5000+ Mhz dual core will work reasonably, Oblivion not even is optimized to make good use of multicore processing. Again, later games will progressively use the cores at the max, so the number of cores is becoming more and more a decisive factor in the choices. But what I think will drive a greater revolution in the multimedia scene will be the hardware ability to process physics functions.

Thanks for the reply,

yea the thing keeping me from getting 6000+ is its TDP of 125W, which is insanely high imo, Im not worried about mobo bottleneck as i read in lots of forums that having x16 won't really bottleneck if running on high res(im not sure why tho)

so like any thing over 2.6ghz is what im looking for then, thanks a lot, kudoed

EDIT: btw I noticed that you have a X2 4400, how has that run on your oblivion?
