Linky1
Hello all, I have had Skyrim since release but I always keep coming back to Oblivion, and now want to create a mod for it. The aim of this mod is to provide a new world in which allows for many more hours to be put into the game, with new quests, npc's, cities and towns, just stuff like that. The other side to the mod though is that it doesn't contain new textures or Meshes, which would mean the mod feels more like it is part of the game. The mod is intended to get people back into Oblivion, and give Oblivion players more to do. So I was just going to request if anyone would like to help me do this, I have already started, but I would also like to know if it is worth doing for the community or if the mod wouldn't be noticed because everyone is playing Skyrim, and if people would download it. Thanks for your time, Linky1 Edited November 4, 2012 by Linky1
Hickory
What does it matter if the mod would be noticed or not because of Skyrim? If you are looking for popularity only, then you are starting off on the wrong track. A mod of the scope you are talking about needs to begin with a passion, not for the promise of prestige, or it is doomed to fail, especially since modding 'teams' are notoriously unreliable. Do it because you want to do it, not because you think it would be 'worth' doing.

Thanks again, Linky1 I believe you have missed my point. The fact that you want to know if others would play it suggests reasons other than a passion to do it for yourself -- there is absolutely no substitute. As for me helping, thanks for asking but I must decline. As I said, modding 'teams', especially scraped together teams, are notoriously unreliable. You will undoubtedly discover this for yourself. But I wish you the best of luck anyway.

Xenavire
If you think you would enjoy doing it, and it would enhance your own game, or even if you just like the challenge, I say go for it. If its a quality mod, more likely than not a ton of players will adopt it, regardless of other games out there. I myself have had a few goes at minor modding, and its challenging, but I was mainly doing it for myself. If I knew how, I would probably break the game down and rebuild it from scratch - just because I want to add a personal touch. Thats how you should go into modding I think - find something you think you need for yourself, or would like to have inside your own game, and make it yourself (or find someone more skilled than you to put it together, which I had to do once or twice.) Then the mod forms, and if it turns out the way you want, you post it here on the nexus for people to share. Thats how most of the mods here came about as far as I am aware. mhahn123
Well as Hickory has already said, modding on this scope (on any scope actually) requires a certain passion and commitment. I can tell you from experience that some aspects of modding are mind numbingly tedious, without that passion you may end up with an abandoned project. My suggestion....start small and then move up to something larger like what you are describing here. Find out if you have the drive to do it all before putting in weeks of work and losing interest. My way of coping is to work on multiple projects. I have about half a dozen of varying sizes right now. When I have an inspiration for a particular project I go full steam ahead on it, then switch to another project when things start to drag on. It keeps me from completely losing interest in any of them. And I've found that researching how to do one thing can often lead to insight on something else that's had me deadlocked. But that's just my quirky way of handling things, everybody has to find their own method to the madness. Best of luck to you.
Lanceor
If you build a good mod, people will download it. I can't guarantee that it will get a million downloads or 10,000 endorsements, but I can assure you any decent sized mod in which a lot of work was put into will get a reasonable following. The big question is... can you build it? Are you willing to put in 2-3 years of your time to build a large mod? Can you stay motivated enough to weather major setbacks and burnout to see the mod through to completion? If your desire is to translate your ideas and creative energy into something more tangible, then tackling a big mod might be for you, since the motivation comes from within. If fame and recognition is your motivation, then I suggest choosing something else as the work:recognition ratio for modding is very poor. If you simply want to see more content for Oblivion, the best thing you can do is to pitch in and and help push one of the big WIP projects across the finish line. Much of the work has already been completed and they just need to finish various bits and pieces. Isben was recently advertising for modders to help finish the Black Marsh mega-mod, and I'm sure there's a few other big projects out there that would welcome more modders. @ mhahn123 - Your method sounds like it would work for me - I'm going to try it. :)
bben46
I still play Oblivion more than Skyrim. This may change with time but currently I prefer Oblivion. I have just started a new play through with some mods I have never used before and in places it is like an entirely new game. So - Yes, people will use a new mod. and if it's good, many people will use it.
