Slavemaster4u
I have the steam version of F3 GOTY edition. So normally I have steam running before starting any of my steam games. But I accidently launched F3 through FOSE. And realized I hadn't launched steam yet. Expected at that point (from other games) that steam would launch, then game would start. But instead the game launched fine. And Steam never started. Played for about an hour. When I quit the game. Checked and steam wasn't running. Wondering if anyone else knows this. Posting this just for a little more random knowledge. Thanks.
M48A5
It is known that Fallout3 has never been dependent on Steam for anything other than sales. Steam has only served as a sales outlet like Game Stop, Best Buy, Walmart and others. It was a Games for Windows Live dependent with the original disk or download requiring the gfwl client to be installed to run properly. Slavemaster4u
@ M48A5; I did have the disc version when game first came out. This is first time bought on steam. So thank you for response. Just haven't run into this with any other steam games. Even old ones. Morrowind as example won't run without steam. Just tried it. Thought the steam api was there to stop game from loading without steam running. I know the steam api is for security reason. Supposedly to stop pirating, which doesn't really work either. So thank you again for the info. Happy gaming.
Deleted21304489User
Here's something else you can do as well: rename falloutlauncher.exe to something else, then renaming fose_loader.exe to falloutlauncher.exe. Launch fallout 3 via steam library. Example: rename falloutlauncher.exe to falloutlauncher1.exe Doing this, will allow you to keep the Steam overlay in your game. Egor17
I found Steam to be a pain. If you think about it, the game is going from your computer to Steam servers and back to your computer to put on the screen. And if you are using WiFi.That is a lot of built in delays. Not to mention the increased chances of it crashing.I much prefer to have the disc then load to alternative server (gog, I didn't say) to keep it up to date.Less crashes and in the nasty case of a re-instal. Much faster. You can also buy your games from alternative but never need it running to play.
Deleted21304489User
Running the game through Steam does not mean the game has to access the Steam server. The game is still run from your computer. However, what you may be referring to, is the Steam overlay. This allows you to take screen shots through Steam. Also, if you have your chat active... this may also cause some stutter (lag) in your FO3 game. Simply turning off the overlay, etc. will decrease what you may be experiencing. All of this can be accomplished in your property settings. If you're using FOSE, what I said above will allow you to run your game in Steam while using FOSE. Simple. Also, what I stated above... you can easily create a desktop shortcut with your new execute and negate Steam all together. It's called options. While I'm at it... make sure to give your FOSE exe. administrative rights. Just open up properties, and click on "Run as Administrator." Easy enough. Slavemaster4u
If, as in my case, game is not on the same drive as your system. Administrative rights are not needed. I have steam installed to B drive and games are in seperate folder on B drive. So no elevated privileges are needed. Also if you set, in steam, game to up date only when run, and then launch game through FOSE, without the above connection to steam, then game will not update. Lastly, don't use steam overlay with this game. Too many issues created. Thanks all for your input. Would like it if all steam games could be run without steam, this is possible but probably not legal.
Deleted21304489User
Fallout 3 never needs to update, as Bethesda has long since moved on from it. This game aside, running your games in Steam should have no effect on your game play. If it does... it's probably your rig.
Deleted54170User
Playing all your STEAM games Offline is simple. 1st. Turn off your Internet connection. 2nd. Click to launch Steam. 3rd. Sign In. Steam pop up gives you the choice to Play in the Offline mode to your heart's content. Always remember while playing, Save your Game manually occasionally. Saving your game manually occasionally makes a point you were that you may have passed the time playing and it isn't Save for the last because only an Auto save existed from your last Auto Save transition. Manual Saves are always the best option because the auto save function overwrites the last one of its kind or doesn't by chance that you've explored out doors without pausing long enough for another AutoSave to occur. On Rest, moving through doors, while standing still, and fast travel. You may have CTDs ruining your day when you least expect it because the auto saves get overwritten as well leaving you at a point way back when or where your game may have done something strange. One Auto Save I got had a picture and was corrupted so it wouldn't load. I had to go back to an earlier Save and do all last couple of hours over. :pinch:
