Deleted3507349User
Here's one that has me scratching my head. I've been playing on a computer with a Radeon HD2400 XT (256Mb). Skyrim was quite playable. When the official HD pack was released I grabbed it. The computer would run it without crashing, but of course the FPS drop was unacceptable (the FPS was just above the limit of playability to begin with). So, I saved it for the time when I would finally upgrade my video card. That time has now come. I installed a GTX560 Ti (1Gb). The game runs awesomely nice now, going from ~19 FPS to 40-60 FPS is a welcome change, and all on ultra settings. Here's the problem, merely enabling the official HD pack now causes random crashes. Sometimes during the loading screen, sometimes after a few minutes of play....totally random. Oh, and this is on a fresh clean install of Skyrim and DLC (Hearthfire, Dawnguard, and the official texture pack) with absolutely no leftovers from the previous installation. Even the character is brand-new to celebrate my shiny new video card. Any ideas? As opposed the official texture pack, I can run the optimized pack by Vano89 without a hitch (the standalone 1024 version). All this leads me to suspect that VRAM might be an issue, but if so why didn't it crash the game with my wimpy old 256Mb Radeon?
Georgiegril
Not sure, but I remember reading somewhere about issues caused by either the 550 or 560 having problems if using 8X MSAA (but not 16X...) Maybe it's just a matter of a little tweaking?
Deleted3507349User
Hmm - I have it set to 16X. I was thinking it might be a matter of tweaking also, but no idea where to try first. Google and searches here failed me. I found lots of references to sound and shadow bugs, but those aren't the problem (I tried the suggested fixes to no avail). Deleted3507349User
Oh well, thanks for reading this folks. I'll just be happy with the optimized version then. Thank the NINE for Nexus modders!
