Main Quest Broken: Delphine's Attic room

DO NOT TALK TO DELPHINE (immediately). Between Deejus and craigsumner, the community has a solution (for some).

I was able to work around it by:

  • Restore from a save immediately before speaking to Delphine
  • Go outside and kill the vampires coincidentally attaching Riverwood
  • Go back in and speak to Delphine.

Note that just exiting and re-entering the inn didn't help. Killing the vampires, or something else that happened while I was killing the vampires, made a difference.

This works for me--I loaded from a save right before the post-Ustengrav conversation with Delphine in the inn.

I exited the inn; I skewered vampires, I re-entered the inn; I requested the attic room; I slept; Delphine acted appropriately, etc.

I know this is a pretty old thread, however Just experienced the bug. I tried every trick mentioned here. Oddly enough, the one I skipped first because it didn't seem likely to work about renting the other room first, then sleeping 24hrs was what worked for me. Just thought I'd toss that out there. :)

I had a problem like the one Deejus described:

My problem is that I actually have the option to rent the attic room, in which she charges me for, but every time I rent the room, she never followed me into the attic room to further initiate the quest.

I noticed that she wasn't walking around as usual while I was experiencing the bug. She was always stuck on a single spot on the floor, a few feet in front of her husband's counter and the alchemy table. Even if I repeatedly attacked her, many guards would enter and attack, but she would never move from that spot.

When I left the inn and immediately re-entered, she still seemed stuck, and still wouldn't follow me to the room.

But after fighting the vamps outside, then coming back in, I noticed that she was walking around the inn again. Talking to her then worked.

So, I think the root cause for not moving forward with the quest is that she can't move around, so she can't follow you. I don't know what's causing her to get stuck. If I had to work around it again, I would avoid asking her about the attic room until she's moving around freely. If she seems stuck, go kill things for a while and come back.

Wow so i went here for help and i decided "why not" and their they were 3 vampires i killed them went inside and bam quest went as it should have, so i would approve and say that this works

I know I'm reviving a dead topic but after struggling to solve this myself, I was able to fix it!

I had the bug of Delphine only offering the rent a room option and no rent the attic room option available.

I tried everything that I could find on the internet and nothing worked for me.

First off I'll say try to avoid console commands, it f***s your game up big time if used incorrectly. Certain ones are safe but especially "SetStage" commands are game breaking and this Quest especially needs to be registered for the game to progress as it splits into another quest while active (A Blade in the Dark) which can only be activated by running it's scripts smoothly.

Also for future reference, ALWAYS and my mean ALWAYS save your game a lot. If you are forgetful like me then download the Auto Save Manager mod. It is highly customizable and always gives you saves to return to!

Okay so after trying all sorts of tips and techniques I tried my own out.

I would reload my game in Ustengrav Depths at the gate right where you find the "Note from a Friend".

1. Read the note and take it. Don't leave it behind as some mods may be messing with your scripts. Also when reading, wait a few seconds for your game to register what it's doing. This is a general rule of thumb. When running lots of mods containing scripts, take it slow. Don't force dialogue and just let things play through as they should to their full. This alone solves 70% of my bug encounters.

2. It would then say "Meet whoever took the horn" blah blah. I ran around the room for a bit here just to make sure the quest scripts had loaded properly. About 20 seconds of jumping and sprinting like a mad man.

3. Open console command (I know I just said that you should avoid it but this worked for me so just do it) and type in "coc riverwood" without the quote marks. This should teleport you to Riverwood but not exactly in Riverwood, just a few metres outside of Riverwood. I noticed fast travel allocates you to a different location in Riverwood, usually at the gate itself. I think that when fast travelling, it causes some sort of script problem. I'm no expert but it's my only logical guess.

4. Talk to Delphine and the option should be available.

Other steps I took included restarting Steam. Deleting older and obsolete saved games. Exiting to menu and loading to Ustengrav after the game had started.

I really hope this helps some of you as I was ready to pull out my hair!

I found that disabling my bashed and tes5merged patches worked, if I load a game before getting the mysterious note. If I load my game after that, because I had done a lot of side quests, then the console commands successfully advanced the quest and it seems to be working fine. If I have my bashed and tes5merged patches enabled, then even console commands fail.

Perhaps I've merged or patched something that messes everything up. I haven't seen this mentioned, so hopefully this helps someone else. This is using Skryim SE, with about 130 mods.

SetStage MQ105Ustengrav 20

SetStage MQ106 5

That did the trick for me. I was actually stuck at an earlier stage where the Note in Usengrav was missing. If I approached the shrine, I got a "Read the Note" objective update, but I had no note to read. I spawned the note with player.additem 0003031F 1 which added the note to my inventory, but reading it didn't do anything. SetStage MQ105Ustengrave 20 moved me to the next objective but I still didn't have the attic dialog. SetStage MQ106 5 finally did the trick.

Old thread yadda yadda. I just fixed another instance of this issue so I thought I'd share it for someone who will probably two years down the line end up here in frustration..

My Delphine was stuck at Dragonsreach repeating generic NPC dialog (possibly stuck in her "I'm with Farengar and you don't need to know anything yet" mode, despite nudging, forwarding the quest using setstafe and adding the word of power. Blade in the dark never started and if I forced it it would still bug out. Killer her and all that jazz solved nothing. For this instance of the issue what you'll want to do is:

Go to Dragonsreach.

Open the console and select Delphine.

Type "recycleactor"

It's gonna get weird but don't worry. The quest marker will float in the air in the Dragonsreach hallway. Exit the building.

The quest marker will update to Delphine's new location proper (that's, of course, the sleeping giant inn)..

The quest will then continue as normal.

And it only took me an hour cycling between save files and wild guessing. That was fun.

I have a slightly different problem.

On my quest. I stormed through the Civil War right out the gate and finished the Civil War quests right away. After the smoke cleared I did the Urgan Windcaller quest. I found the note in ustengrav read it there, and when I went to Delphine in Riverwood, she just only offers the regular room to me,

I did these so far:

1) paid her then try to tell her I want the attic room instead. Just the regular room option only on her

2) revert to a save in windcallers tomb after reading the note, Same outcome. Only regular room option

3) same as 2 but used coc riverwood in the console. Only regular room option still

4) kill and resurrect her. same outcome

5) disable and enable, still nothing

6) went in the room on the left and slept for 24 hours, woke up and waited. Same outcome. no option for attic room

7) Verify integrity of game cashe in steam, not files where found. Same thing, no attic room option

8) Tried advancing the quest to when Delphine gives me the horn with the setstage command. Went to arngeir and he has nothing new to say to me.

So I think I tried everything I could, and still no attic room option. Come to think of it when I read the note, I could've sworn the quest a Blade in the Dark pops up, and that never happened. So I am fresh out of Ideas right now.

I have a severe problem regarding the main quest of Skyrim, one problem that actually breaks the main quest, and I've tried everything I have at hand to solve it. It goes as follows:

In the quest "The horn of Jurgen Windcaller", I got to the point when I need to ask Delphine for the attic room in Sleeping Giant Inn, in order to sleep in the room in the left, be aproached by her get the horn to take to the Graybeards, and get the quest "A blade in the dark". I've been past this point two times in other playthroughs with no problems at all. But now, when I talk to Delphine she won't even offer me the option of the attic room, only to rent the normal one. As consecuence, I can't end the quest of the horn, nor start "A blade in the dark", at all.

I've tried several ways without being able to solve the issue:

- Ending the quest of the horn and starting the next with the console - the first marks as finished, but the Graybeards act as it never happened, and the latter won't even start, no matter the number of the stage I use.

- Adding the horn via the console - it won't work, the graybeards won't recognize I have it in my inventory.

- Attacking Delphine, ley her crouch into the ground and then standing up, killing her and resurrecting her (after making her non essential), disabling and enabling her, using "recycleactor" and everything - she won't give me the line for "rent the attic room" no matter what.

- Reverting to an old save - the result is always the same, and I keep backups from practically all my older saves.

- Returning later to ask for the room - same result.

- Veryfing file integrity - same result.

I don't have any mods that alter Delphine or the storyline in any way, and I don't have DLC (Dawnguard or Heartfire). Also, I've seen some threads with the exact same issue, without a solution. If by any chance anyone can help me to progress the main quest, I'd be absolutely grateful.

IDK, if the issue can be solved in a normal way, maybe someone can point me to a mod/make one that serves the purpose of start quests, making them advance, or something that forces NPC's to give you all the options in their dialogue in order to trigger quests? Anything could help. Thanks in advance.

this happend to me aswell and i fixed it by going back to a save before i had completed the quest to find the horn in the draug cave and took of all my modes and it worked maybe try that. then just add your mods back after you have gotten past the glitch
