Steam Workshop, why is it disliked?

Oi,

Seems to me there are very few friends of the Steam Workshop. For good reasons I suppose, but which?

(This question is not meant for a pro or anti workshop discussion, I actually don't know.)

Like litteork said, quite a few it's users have a habit of being angry, rude and impatient. It's harder to upload mods (In my opinion) since it has to be done via the creation kit, and it also only allows files with one .bsa, so large mods are screwed.

I have a few reasons for not using SW:

1) I've always used the Nexus, and have never had any issues with it. I see no reason to support a corporate competitor.

2) SW has some very disturbing details in the fine print about retaining the right to distribute your work for a fee. I loathe the idea of mods being monetized, particularly by companies which are already raking in money hand over fist.

3) SW automatically updates any mods you download from it to the latest version, regardless of whether you want to or not. I prefer to be able to choose what version I use.

I hate Steam Workshop because it is built wrong and they won't fix it.

Steam Workshop is bad because it severely limits what types of mods you can upload. On Skyrim Nexus you can upload practically anything. Here are some common types of mods you can't upload to Steam Workshop:

1. Mods that have both an .esm and an .esp.

2. Mods that have loose files.

3. Mods that include documents like readme files, user guides, walkthough documents, and spoiler documents.

4. Mods with images such as maps or pictures of the different options that can be installed. (Like maybe the armor comes in two colors depending on which texture files you choose to install.)

5. Mods that have multiple .esp files for things like different difficulties, different item colors, different degrees of lore-friendliness, or for compatibility with different mods.

100mb upload limit makes it impossible to distribute more expansive graphical mods. Very limiting. Can't upload multiple ESM/ESP files which can be prohibitive, and no method of alternate or optional files or modular addons or even a step installer that would allow you to customise what to install.

That kind of thing only works for mods with a very narrow scope of effect.

The user base is also horrible.

I see! Thanks a lot for the clarification.

It is nothing for me either then, 100MB won't do. That really limits voice-acted mods aswell. Also, the Nexus deserves the loyalty.

What you said about their right to distribute work for a fee... I find that especially disturbing knowing Bethesda did sign something with the word "Microsoft" written on it.

JanusForbeare Quoted for truth :))))

And like others said file size!!!! . my current mod im building is a huge file 400mb easy. but the nexus give me the option to upload that as a bsa file in a zipped rar which means i can drastically reduce the size.

No such luck on WS as it wont let you upload compressed files.

Plus i think steam is a wolf in sheeps clothing i cant count the amount of times the have hindered my gaming experience. and there terms and conditions is/has been investigated as unfair against the consumer and illegal

and rightly so

I agree with most statements against the steam workshop, although i appriciate the fact the bethesda made something directed to modders(yes evne with the suspicious terms and conditions) i still think nexus is the best.

Also, it seems that the steam workshop is where stolen mods ends up a lot and i heard that it was seldom moderated and taken care of. I have 3 of my mods there, but i do not support them anymore and they won't get updates, steam workshop got more whiny ignorant kids than i like..sure they have a underdeveloped frontal lobe because of age, does'nt mean i don't want to bitchslap them for acting like idiots. There are people here on nexus that show little appriciation for the mods they download, but steam got even more of them. Im not saying i have seen many of them, but some of the bigger mods gets a bunch of them, and it's making me sick that they are so rude against people who work their ass of and the players sometimes act like they are paying costumers. :)

So bottomline, Nexus has good support, workshop got less support and more trolls - Conclussion: I do not prioritize workshop at all. Some may say that "but you can get all your mods updates downloaded for you, well so does NMM, but it asks you if you want first and does'nt steamroll your old version if you forgot unsubscribe."

I guess that most people who use workshop for publicity, i mean EVERYONE who owns skyrim got a steamaccount, they don't need to make a nexus account to get their mods, so there got to be a lot of players who only use the workshop?
