Creation kit crashes... OMG, why did I forget to save, again?

Hello, people.

I'm feeling melancholy at the moment, to say the least. More accurately I'm ****** off and cursing myself, CK, the weather, my cat... you get the picture. :armscrossed:

I had a custom pet follower all ready to go. It's a dwarven 'stealth' spider and it's wicked. After testing its functionality, all I needed to do was add messages to be displayed that translated each of its dialogue responses. I wanted that because the hisses of the spider would mean nothing to the player, unless they had subtitles enabled. Easy... or it ought to have been. I edited each topic info start fragment to add the message property and then added the fragment itself. I saved the quest and hit the 'Save' button for the esp...

... 'Fatal error! A crash report has been...

Aargh!

I was then faced with finding and removing all of the fragment scripts (which had been saved, as they compiled correctly), one at a time and re-doing the script fragment for each and every dialogue info. Thank someone (me, probably) I re-named each fragment so I could find it easier.

Why do I never learn? CK is programmed by the Divines to crash when you least expect it and when it will have the most time-consuming consequences.

It's fixed now, two hours later. I'm not bothered. Honestly*.

* I have been known to lie through my teeth from time to time.

Could it be because of the fun you're having? Mistakenly taking for building a mod no differently then playing it? Like we do when we are in the crowd playing. We know that we will have to quit eventually, but until the fun feeling of the group activity dies down we don't think about it.

Of course; I may be incorrect, but it sure seems like I was having fun building a mod. The only difference was I had built a computer from other computers I got from scrap people were selling and the parts burned out as often because I was enjoying what I was doing so, so much so, I didn't remember to save since it like I was building a game. To save it? The mod or a game Save just slipped my mind. Probably because I was an outgoing person in my youth it just seems almost realistic when playing the game or working on a mod that I then would forget to Save.

And Voila' Crash, sizzle, fry! Oh! MY!

You're right that I'm having a lot of fun with it...

... it was still no fun taking 2 hours to re-do what only took half an hour before the crash!

Still, the little stealth spider is now good to go again.

I was just on a roll at the time. Add semi-colon to fragment, compile, re-name fragment, edit source, add property, Fill property, add script fragment, compile, OK topic info, next topic info etcetera. The idea of closing the quest and saving seemed pointless. I was even so foolishly optimistic that once I'd finished editing the fragments in one quest I did the same with another one... all without saving the esp! CK hadn't crashed on me for weeks. Why would it crash now? Crash, bang whallop!

This took me years to figure out ... and it's so simple you will cry.

SkyrimEditor.ini

[Audio]

bEnableAudio=0

That's it !!

Now go enjoy hours and hours of editing without a crash!

However: If you want to use the in editor interface to hear a sound it will not work.

a quick re-edit and it will. This will not effect your game play at all.

Also: the kit will not close after this edit you have to quit wait a bit and tap the exit box a few times.

Again this will not hurt anything ... well worth it ...

Sorry, mate,

This I did ages ago.

Sorry to spoil your party, but it's totally unrelated. I'm just saying this so that other people don't believe that this is some utopian cure for CK crashes.

CK will crash for a number of reasons, not just the one (correct) item that you stated.

On the bright side, you only ever lose a maximum of 20 minutes work as the CK backs up every 20mins.

You are so right.

It was just that in this instance, I needed to remove all of the script pex and psc files from the mod. Or I felt that I needed to do so and that that was the best way to proceed. Starting again, with the psc and pex files deleted meant that there were no loose scripts that I needed to worry about. House-keeping, I suppose you'd call it.

"Sorry to spoil your party" ... odd response as I was just looking to help you out.

I guess I have no clue how badly you have messed up your Skyrim. This was a one time fix for me and has been for over a decade.
I can edit as long as I like or even just leave it on overnight. I have never had a problem with crashes after this at all. So your "number of reasons"
has been added by you at some point. I didn't say this fix fixed some of the crashes ... It never crashes anymore.

Ah...

Looks like the Divines have punished my indiscretion, NexusComa!

CK is now crashing every time I try to save my esp. No other esp files... just the important one. In SSeedit it looks clean... white forms everywhere except for the yellow forms that have been in for ages and I don't want to remove, plus the normal pink form because I altered the terrain a touch in one cell. I use SSeedit every day, but for the last six days, nothing had changed after applying 'filter for cleaning'. No 'Identical to master' records, no 'undelete' records. No different manual edits to be done. Upshot, I now have to undo 6 days of work and revert to the last SSEedit backup that can be saved. I'm at a loss. CK hasn't crashed for me in ages until now. Oddly, the .BAK files from a time when CK was still saving Ok... they crash, too.

That'll teach me not to be rude to you!

I have to laugh.

I'm pretty patient (normally), so I'll just load that file and plod through what I did in the last six days.
