TommiTomo looked directly at the RingOfRings. “I am TommiTomo, the LittleFatMan though I can also be the LittleFatWoman and the LittleFatOne. Often I am others or more than one of those at the same time.”

“Such is the nature, of the RingOfRings, that they can not be worn by, melded to, MrZero or even myself. They must be used, linked to, mortals or lesser immortals. Why they are, what they do, is very near impossible to explain on a mortal level. No, I am neither mortal or lesser immortal but 'eternal'. There are mediate immortals, greater immortals and grand immortals along with false eternals and true eternals. I am a true eternal but also a grand immortal. Or at least that is the closest to the truth that I can get to in mortal terms. I could not grasp the RingOfRings and they could not meld with me.”

The group began to spread the picnic baskets out, to share in the delicious goodies in them.

Essie looked to TommiTomo. “Who would wear them? Would we put them on our fingers?”

TommiTomo shook his head, just a little. “No, they go around the head, if one has one head or more of them. They appear like thin headbands unless special actions are attempted or in special conditions. The wearing of the RingOfRings is easier at first, the melding is light, but matters become more challenging and the melding deeper, over time.”

Eddie took a bite of chicken, finished eating it and then spoke. “What do they do?”

“A trillion dollar plus question!” TommiTomo smiled. “They do what they can in any given situation as dictated by a whole lot of limitations. They work with every individual mortal, or lesser immortal, in a unique fashion those much is general, is the same. For you there will at first be special abilities that you might call 'magic' or 'psychic abilities' or even 'super powers'. You will be given different kinds of Quests to carry out and will develop, instigate, Quests of your own. To try to give you more information that that will be to confuse matters.”

Essie nodded. “We are only mortals.”

“No, you are lesser immortals as are all who have survived to come through the Transways from Terra. Scully, Mulder, Andy, perhaps it is time for some truth telling.” TommiTomo took a gulp of hot percolated coffee with a dash of milk added. “Aaahhh, very nice!”

Eddie, Essie and Ellie were not so sure about using, melding with, the RingOfRings but they did know they had to do something about the dark situation they were in and not just for themselves. They did not see themselves as heroes, as champions, but they had a strong driving sense of justice, of fairness, that was at the core of their being. They were also very frustrated.

Truth was that the triplets were more than ready to take such a risk but what about the others. The robot, that was not really just a robot, the neobaby triplets, the exotic hybrid animals, the cyborg triplets, all seemed to be accepting of the idea. All of them simply nodded or, with the robot, blinked rapidly with small green lights.

The decision was made, somehow, the thirteen rings disappeared from the briefcase and rings appeared around the heads of all but the robot, which gained a ring around its true, hidden self inside the exterior secondary robot mechanism.

At first nothing seemed to change at all with the Grand Thirteen itself. The briefcase shimmered and then was filled with other items being thirteen devices of one of one kind and three times three other kinds.

Ellie turned to Andy. “What truth must you clarify with us?”

Andy looked troubled, thoughtful, for a moment and then visibly made a decision. “We are Unity and our friends and trusted allies. Others are Unity but we 'sense' them with out being able, as yet, to make full strong contact with them. What is Unity? We are not sure but, somehow, the name fits! At least it will do for now. All who have come through the Transways are rejuvenated to youthfulness, health and fitness but also enhanced. That is fine enough but, for unknown reasons, increasingly when Transways migrants die, they turn into zombies or worse. We have been doing a contract job for MrZero, have been trying to gain information about the growing incidents of death leading to zombification. That is how I came to spot you, to note your physical similarities, Essie, Ellie and Eddie. Then I 'sensed' more than physical similarities between us.”

Unity? Was it a new faction, or factions, or was it more than that?

Scully spoke. “We are not the real Scully and Mulder but are shapeshifter assassins who were sent to terminate the real Scully and Mulder. Instead we ended up befriending them as friends, bodyguards and, at times, decoys to confuse their enemies. Scully and Mulder did not emerge from the Transways, as we did.”

TommiTomo responded. “You are Scullerra and Foxulder, your assumed names. Those who did not come through the Transways were extra damaged and needed, need, more rejuvenation. They are starting to emerge from extra Waygates that are appearing. Even now 56 of the 'delayed migrants' are appearing in the Great Waygate Complex. One day, not too distant in the future, Scully and Mulder will emerge from such a Waygate.”

He changed subjects. “As for the zombies, they have something to do with the Red Plague and the dangerous semiactive nature of the ancient alien artifacts; they must either be made fully active or inactive. Fully active would be best for inactive would turn the Lunar Labyrinth into a death trap. I can not tell you any more than that except to say that human stupidity played a vital part in what has happened, is happening and could happen.”

Then TommiTomo smiled and, with a sparkling shimmer, vanished. The picnic baskets, extra blanket, and other items remained right there.

The thirteen devices, now in the briefcase, soon turned out to be devices adapted to the use of the GrandThirteen. There was one for TechHenry, an augmentation for his real self; there were three special teddybears for the neobabies, three special adaptive devices for the exotic hybrid animals, three extraordinary cybernetic modules for the cyborgs and the supersoldier each had a multiple function glove like device.

This time, when emptied of items, the briefcase changed shapeform with an odd shimmering effect and became three modular pouch like items that were taken by Ellie, Essie and Eddie.

They finished off the picnic, kept everything useful for future use and dropped off other stuff at some recycling bins as they left the memorial gardens. Again they were just another fringe group moving, nomadic style, through the vast complex that was Moontropolis with its hundred plus million people. Such groups were common and considered normal.

CHAPTER 0005: GRANDTHIRTEEN; MOONTROPOLIS SUBWAYS SEEKING SHELTER

That Moontropolis was a vast supercity, that it had over a 100,000,000 people, was shown in the massive, complicated Super Subway Network that was made up of over 100 Subway Networks. At any one time over five million people were traveling the Subways. There were hundreds of advanced monorail trains and trams, thousands of the less advanced double-rail trains and trams along with Subway roads, water canals, walkways and even long distance elevators. There were special trains, and trams, that ran vertical upwards, through levels of the underworld, and downwards. There were hundreds of thousands of Subways workers, guards, police and specialists. Then there were millions of folk who lived illegally in the vast Super Subway Network.

Over 100,000,000? Unofficially, the government admitted the true size of the Moontropolis could easily be over twice that.

Foxulder, and Scullerra, led the others to a secondary Subway Station where tram, and train, tunnels intersected. Yet they caught no public transit machines but instead were threading along damp, concrete lined stone tunnels with dim glowing fluroflats on the ceiling. Water dripped from the ceiling at time, pooling on the floor. Rats scurried away from them but not in terror but more out of habit, or so it seemed.

Small, discrete, signs disguised as graffiti, amongst ganger and other mass graffiti, led them through tunnel, after tunnel. They diverted down a long abandoned double-rail tunnel, partly flooded, but walked along surprisingly well made catwalks of different materials. They passed some Wildchild gangers but the Wildchilds were defensive aggressive only.

As they passed the gangers, who were in a kind of utility alcove on the other side of the tunnel, information arose in the minds of some of the GrandThirteen. Essie stopped, the others did the same and some were curious why but none of the GrandThirteen.

Essie spoke to the wary Wildchilds in their leathers, quasileathers and ganger colors. “Big trouble is coming but not all at once; it will come in stages, like walking up steps. You Wildchilds need to start preparing for trouble, making alliances with people you can trust and warning other factions. I would ask you to warn even enemy gangs and other folk you don't like.” Then she slipped a coin out of a pouch and threw it across to a Wildchild woman who grabbed it automatically out of the air. “Official, authentic, $100coin. It is no bribe but given to you to convince you that I mean what I say and to help you prepare. It is not much but all that can be spared for now.”

Essie had acted on impulse, as if she had known there would be a $100coin in a pouch that had been empty, as far as she knew.

The craggy, tough woman ganger looked into Essie's eyes. “Thanks for the cash, but something tells me you mean what you say with out the coin being given. Still, it will come in handy. Things have been getting a bit too weird around here even for us Wildchilds. We were thinking of moving into a more secure zone even if we have to accept having a smaller ganger territory. Something tells me you know how to read gangalang so this is yours.”

Gangalang was common ganger language used for trade and other purposes. Except that it had been taken up by many non ganger folk, much to ganger annoyance, and was used through out large parts of Moontropolis. The woman threw her a cheap, solid-state portable dataclip and Essie caught it out of the air. They nodded respect at each other and the group moved on.

Andy grinned mildly. “I did not know you had so much money you could give it away.”

“Neither did I!” Essie answered with a mild shrug. “In fact I did not have that $100coin until just before I needed it.”

Andy snorted. “The FreeNet could use some $100coins but maybe later.”

They paused at viewed the information that the ganger woman had passed onto them. Or at least most of them viewed the information. It was a series of disturbing stories and fragmented whispers that did not paint a good picture at all of what was going on in the area. The Red Plague Monsters, the unlifen, and the undead, were showing up to burden Subways Folk with yet more problems.

They came to a Order of Compassion Outpost, where body-armored Orderhood of Protection soldiers stood on guard with autorifles, submachineguns and autoshotguns. The GrandThirteen were taken by surprise by this for such protection was hardly ever needed; it only arose with the appearance of great danger and not from most people who had too much respect for, need of and even love for the Orderhood of Compassion.

Ellie stepped forward to talk with a Mother of Compassion, who ran the outpost. She was looking tired and the outpost seemed extra crowded with people. She was a tall, elegant woman who was eurowhite but scarred from the Red Plague with red streaks running down one cheek in an exotic pattern. She could have had it medically fixed up, with government assistance funds or corporate charity programs, but apparently had decided not to.

Martina smiled. “Hello, Ellie. How did your journey go?”

Ellie smiled back. “It went quite well. We got the necessary part for TechHenry to keep on functioning at top rate. We got TechHenry and upgrade to his super virtual reality linkages.” Then she took out a $100coin and gave it to the woman. “We are doing some work for MrZero and have met a man called TommiTomo. We have linked with something called the RingOfRings.”

Martina lost her smile and looked concerned. “The Orderhood, of the Way, knows that MrZero means well but can cause trouble, much trouble. We have had dealings with him. As for TommiTomo, I have met him, and her, on five occasions. He assisted us greatly but gave us challenges to meet. I see you brought in one of the young Unityfolk we have been looking for.”

Martina looked at Andy, looked into his eyes, and he gave a start. Then he visibly relaxed and smiled. He had just learned that the Orderhood of the Way was Unity founded and run, from its core-network. The FreeNet was no longer alone.

Martina sighed. “Andy, the FreeNet has done some foolish things. We have had to help you four times and some of your supposed 'trusted allies' are enemy agents working towards your downfall. Yet you have also done some brave and clever things. We will discuss such matters soon.” She turned back to Ellie. “Red Plague monsters are infiltrating this area and not just the basic, almost mindless ones. Tykada have shown up, including psychic-tkyado as well as the more common berserkers, skirmishers, grunters and beasts.”

Tykada tended to live only briefly thanks to their savage lifestyle and only some were former humans or mammalian animals. Unfortunately, tykada also bred quickly and the more basic they were, the faster they bred. Other Red Plague monsters were such as the almost mindless ghoulacs, wingwals, umbanoids and others that also bred too quickly for the good of humanity though many were also killed by other RP-monsters.

Martina looked around. “As you can see, we are in desperate need of almost everything. The $100coin will do good. As you know, hard currency achieves amazing results these days.”

Money supply had been running short in many parts of the Lunar Labyrinth Colonies and a fair few factions claimed some kind of economic sabotage was taking place. The various governments seemed incapable, unwilling, to truly do anything about what was taking place.

Essie nodded and gave Martina four more $100coins. Then she took out a vialpack of four vials of concentrated healing serum, from the same pouch the coins had come from. She took out nine more such vialpacks, in a seemingly impossible manner from a pouch that looked only big enough to hold one such vialpack. The Mother of Compassion only looked mildly surprised and then carefully placed the vialpacks away.

Such things had appeared before but none seemed to know just where the amazing concentrated healing serum came from or how it was made. The trouble was that it was far too attractive to dangerous government, corporate, organized crime and other people so it had to be used with extreme care. The healing would be done while the use of the serum would be kept as secret as possible.

Martina sighed. “We could use your help in the outpost. In turn we will get you a private space for your group to use.”

The agreement was made. The neobabies, and hybrid-animals, entertained children though Hiwing did so with some aloofness. The robot allowed his secondary power generator to be used to charge up rechargeable batteries and portable power-cells. The cyborgs helped stand guard. The supersoldiers worked as healers, as clerks, as orderlies, as anything that was needed.

CHAPTER 0006: 3DTV NEWS BULLETIN

6.1

Beautifully elegant, perhaps too perfect, News Anchor Stella Starlight sat on a sophisticated stool-chair that allowed her long, smooth legs to be shown. The golden blonde wore a very short skirt and a top that left midriff showing, including belly button, and much cleavage. But Stella Starlight was not real; she was a computer generated photo-realistic 3Dpersona. She spoke smoothly, very warmly, in Esperanto but also other standard languages, with perfect lip-sync, that a viewer wished to hear.

She smiled luke warmly. “Disturbing news has come from Terra, the home world of humanity, that the newly activated Skynet has quarantined the whole planet. No unauthorized ships will be allowed to leave Terra, manned or unmanned. The same goes for railgun-launcher capsules and other secondary forms of surface to orbit technologies.”

Big 3Dwallscreens showed massive Skynet orbital-forts floating high above the curving blue green of the Earth. The scene was a little too rich, vivid, to be totally real but it was real enough. An old fashioned gravity-booster shuttle was trying to leave the home world. It was barbaric appearing, bristling with weapons as if preparing to do something aggressive. It fired off a missile at Skynet. There was a flash of a laser-cannon pulsebeam and the shuttle exploded dramatically and so did the missile.

Stella smiled, turned gracefully with the panning of a 3Dcamera, and managed to reveal more cleavage, somehow, with out meaning to do so. “This event has taken few by surprise and has been predicted by many for the past few years. Valuable resources will continue to be sent to the Earth along with volunteers willing to risk no return from the planet and a very few who will be allowed to return. Deliveries to Terra will continue by one way, one use, glideshuttles and parachute-pods along with antigrav canisters.”

The 3Dwallscreen scenes shifted to show a big glideshuttle diving gracefully down through the atmosphere, its heat shield heating up, but damage would not matter as the heat shield had to only work once. Then the big vehicle was gone from sight as it delivered its humanitarian cargo to struggling Terrans.

Stella Sunshine smiled, flicking back rich silken hair. “Terran Orbital space-stations, space-platforms satellites and cylinder-habitations are going to remain fully functional, remaining separate from the newer Skynet satellites, orbital-forts and weapon-platforms.”

Again, a scene shift, this time to show a big twin wheel space-station, the wheels moving in opposite direction of each other and fast enough to help create artificial gravity along with quasigravity fields. The big space-station looked old but in good condition.

Stella Sunshine smiled and her perfect white teeth glinted just a little in the studio lights.

CHAPTER 0007: GRANDTHIRTEEN; DEALING WITH ZOMBIES

7.1

More refugees came to the outpost with troubling stories of RP-monsters but also of people dying and becoming zombies or ghouls or even vampires. Yet they also spoke of strange, black clad supersoldiers who were moving in squads, who were killing off those threats. Others were also fighting the monsters such as local militia, low level mercenaries hired by locals and even some Moontropolis Guards of the Moontropolis Guardia. The supersoldiers were most effective, of course, wiping out enemy after enemy but even they were troubled by the most powerful of the unlifen and undead beasties.

Essie, Ellie and Eddie made a decision. They set out to patrol the immediate area of the Orderhood of Compassion Outpost. The neobabies remained with the cyborg, 'other daddies and mummies'. With them went Pussydog, moving with quiet power, being the special battle beast she was designed and program-conditioned to be.

The small group of humans rushed past them along a metal catwalk. They were locals who managed to eek out a living in the maze of tunnels, chambers and other spaces in the area. After them came two zombies that were once human, now antinatural, now preserved to remain undead and strangely regenerated. These zombies did not rot, or fall to pieces, unless their strange regeneration failed, as it sometimes did. These zombies shambled quickly, being former locals. One had been a woman and the other a man.

Essie raised a very powerful Stormbringer Autopistol and fired but what happened, surprised the triplets and even Pussydog. Yet the triplets knew that the event had something to do with the exotic glove that was on the hand holding the gun. The powerful bullet glowed, as it shot through the air, and hit the woman like zombie. She was not blasted to true death but glowed, shimmered, and became the woman she had been. Or so it seemed. A second glowing bullet struck the man, fired by Eddie, and he the same happened to him.

The man and woman seemed lightly confused but very calm considering what they had gone through. They came forward and seemed more concerned about others rather than themselves.

The woman spoke. “It was like a terrible nightmare except experienced in a removed fashion. We need to find the others of our group. We were chasing them.”

“Not you, those zombies were not you!” Essie slipped her large Stormbringer into its large holster. It was a weapon favored by cyborg mercenaries and elite organized crime thuggies. A supersoldier could fire one with one hand but not most people. Knowledge flowed into her mind, into the minds of the others, even as she spoke. There would rarely be a big flow of such data, which was often frustrating. “Some people went running past us.”

So they got hold of the others, who were shocked but overjoyed to find their group members were no longer of the shambling undead. The four escorted the group to get their abandoned stuff, they had been on their way to the outpost when ambushed by a creature of some kind. No others had manged to appear to steal anything.

Back at the outpost the two former zombies, still coming to terms with what had happened, described a creature that moved with awful speed, agility and power. They had dealt with a vampire and it had killed two adults of the group, feeding off life energies and blood along with some liquified flesh. The result had been two, almost mindless, shamblers.

So it was confirmed; vampires could create zombies by killing humans when feeding off them. It was a horrific discovery but one backed up already by many dark whispers and urban mythologies. When asked how they had turned the zombies back into mortals, who seemed rejuvenated and enhanced, the supersoldier triplets honestly stated they did not know. They did point to the dull metallic rings around their heads that some others had not seemed to notice until then; the connection was no accident but was fundamental to the nature of the RingOfRings, or so the triplets knew in a basic fashion. At least some knowledge came intrinsic with wearing the RingOfRings.

7.2

So the undead arose from some folks, coming through the Transways from Terra, who died of various causes and then became zombies, ghouls or vampires. But another way was when vampires fed off people and from that could emerge zombies, ghouls or vampires; just as often the victims staid dead. There were always many more zombies than ghouls and many more ghouls than there were vampires. Zombies sometimes caused the emergence of other zombies, many a victim staid dead, and ghouls had some chance of creating zombies and, less so, other ghouls. Generally, at least sixty percent of victims staid dead and did not 'turn undead'.

Ghouls were smarter than zombies, could use more advanced weapons and tools, even maintain them, but were unable to do more than that. Vampires varied in intelligence, as humans did, but seemed to have dark, inhuman, cunning. Zombies varied from almost mindless to being smart enough to use crude weapons; the 'smarter' they were, the faster they shambled.

One good bit of news, for mortals, was that the unlifen and undead hated each other more than they did mortals, than living humans, and would often divert from attacking humans to fight each other. Other good news was that xolasers, high voltage electricity and ultraviolet light did both more harm than they did to normal life; that is far more harm to the undead than to the unlifen and far more harm to the unlifen than to the living. Xolasers were mass produced, were fairly cheap and easy to obtain, and were solid-state durable as were stunsticks and other electric stun devices. UV-lamps were used as medical treatments.

The outpost needed expanding and that meant carefully creating openings into bordering chambers. The work began with TechHenry using a tool extension to one of his outer robotic arms to open up part of a wall. The task was soon completed and then others extended the space, evening it out into a rectangular space being wider than it was high.

Eddie closed the lid of an empty metal bin, quite large, and when he opened it up again the container was full of large, moderately thick, survival blankets that were water, fire and bullet resistant. It was no coincidence that he opened, and closed, the lid with his exotically gloved right hand. The blankets were quickly taken to be used. Twice the metal bin 'gave up' blankets, twice it was compact packaged ready to eat, to drink, food rations, once it was a whole lot of concentrated healing serum in vialpacks and once it was two large, but compactly packed, dometents. Nobody saw this 'miracle' other than the group and some Followers of Compassion.

Doing such a trick had its limits for it used RingOfRings energies and something called fatecredit that the group found it was gaining at a rate of one fatecredit per second; they had been gaining the fatecredit, at that rate, since they had begun melding with the RingOfRings. The Fatecredit System was meant to help keep them to safe limits of what they could reasonably do with the RingOfRings and also was a reward system of sorts. Also the list of items they could produce was so far quite limited and had some odd choices in both what it had ,and what it did not have, included.

The group settled into life at the outpost except that Scullerra and Foxulder, the shapeshifters that often chose to look like Scully and Mulder, departed to carry out some kind of mission. The two were reluctant to speak of what they intended to do but they gave some details of tracking down some kind of 'ancient alien artifact', or at least what was supposed to be one. Andy would remain at the outpost as a liaison between the FreeNet and the Greater Unity of the Orderhood of the Ways.

The First Limited Quest was to assist the local people, of that area, to survive various threats which could mean strengthening their position there or helping them leave the area.

The Second Limited Quest was to find out why the unlifen, and undead, threats were focusing so heavily in that area. The identity, and purpose, of the black clad supersoldiers was also to be discovered.

The Third Limited Quest was to gain access to the RingBase.

The Fourth Limited Quest was to learn about the 'Thirteen Grand Secrets of Moontropolis'.

The First Side Quest was to find, and rescue, the Five BBs.
