jojo man
Well folks, here's what i've found. I can't say that any of this is set in stone, but if the game does go in the direction that this states, I can begin to seriously consider giving up what has always been my biggest hobby: Gaming. It seems that anymore everything is going downhill and being watered down into mediocrity. A few prime examples: Halo series, Kotor MMO, Oblivion, Bioshock, etc. Maybe i'm just being pessimistic, but it seems that the quality of games in general has been on a steady decline in recent years. I know one things for sure, I'm not having the kind of fun that I used to. Maybe i'm crazy, but games constantly getting streamlined is making the industry feel largely generic and uninspired. bben46
I think you are just getting jaded. The games are probably just as good as ever, with better graphics. But you have seen all of these plots before. Take a few months off, rejoin real life for a while. Say hi to you family. Then, when wait at least three months. By then, you will be bored to tears by tv and ready to sell your family off to the lowest bidder. Then you will be ready for games again.
cosinusoid
deus ex 2 was seriously bad compared to the first one , it had been designed for a console so every time you walked into a room it had to reload even if you were on the pc. games ARE on the decline if you have been playing since the arcade/earlyhome computer /console days. the youngsters of later generations i cannot speak for. consider just this one example in fallout 3 , a very samll example of how there is a great chain of corporate/politial crap tied into games that would have , in times gone by (eg before the mega console boom of recent times) not matterd to the development team/programmers. kids in fallout cannot have their heads blowen off with a shotgun so as default they cannot be NPC companions, evil characters etc. this 1 simple thing leads to a whole range of limitations concerning story telling etc. im not racist , but anyone will have noticed that all big corporate games now have usualy at least 1 main , over the top black character even if its totaly out of place in the story. like in a game called crysis there was a guy called jester , who acted like he was from the ghetto while wearing what was suposed to be a combat gear reserved for a tiny number of elete fighters .perhaps even freedog from fallout3 is like this also , he dose seam to act very out of place. the token black guy. dont get me wrong here , GTA-SA has mostly black people , and you are black in it , its a brilliant game with great characters. before going into more detial im just saying that modern games have massive restrictions and requierments that spoil the story and due to the age group that the sales teams promote to , there is practially no adult content in games (blood and gore dose not count). Dark0ne
Pretty sure I read on Blues News that only 4% of PC games actually make a profit. These latest mainstream gaming attempts and the push towards "casual gamers" is a knee jerk reaction from the industry in an attempt to increase that number. More than likely it will fail, the industry will collapse to a degree, and you'll see the rise of indie games once more. Rinse, repeat, the cycle continues. I can't help but feel that (at the very least) some of what Ben said is true though. I have been at this for literally just over half of my life, so no matter how much I love it, it's bound to get a little stale eventually. Maybe a "vacation" is whats called for. macmert
Just play the old great classic games... I have a pretty good machine but I still play International Karate III :) Seriously I totally agree with you, the gaming industry is going downhill for a time... Maybe this Global Crisis will eleminate some of the bad gaming companies and we will have some quality products again... But it might be a long shot since all the companies suffer the crisis... All in all, play old games I say :) like fallout 1 and 2, jagged alliance series, M.A.X., Ufo enemy unknown and such :) nowadays not many good games are published so I kinda feel sick of gaming too... fallout3enthusiast
To be honest I agree with you. I do play games like Fallout 3, Bioshock etc, but the experience is tainted with the fact I remember the complexity and depth of past games and when comparing them the older games are so much better than the newer ones. I always felt like there was more of a mystery to older games due to the time that was spent crafting the gameplay mechanics and plotline so that it didn't feel artificial, not something so obviously crafted to achieve certain goals(Fallout 3). For instance I respect Bioshock for its art design and general atmosphere but if you take away all the gloss what your left with is very substandard gameplay and story. Put it next to System Shock 2 and it is really pretty poor. These days games seem more like tech demos, no real difficulty(difficulty doesn't mean dying more) or depth, nothing. The thing is, I wouldn't purely put this down to the influence of console games. If you look at the console games the same thing has happened to them. The early survival horror and console rpg games were pretty solid and exciting but now they are mainly 'complete in a day' that you end up completing in a week by playing an hour each day or something. Pfff

Pfff I guess today the gamers tend to "consume" games quickly... The new generation of gamers dont want to spend a lot of time playing a game, dont want to really tire their gray matter, just become a casual player... Today the games are nothing but graphics, no content in it... I remember playing Heretic II or Hexen II and they were just brilliant... I also remember that I never finished hexen II due to its complicated puzzles :)
jojo man
I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way. If what that link suggests turns out to be fact, then thats one more great title we can chalk up as "murdered for coporate interests".
