Soul gems aren't stacking?

I have a seemingly weird glitch. I have a bunch of empty soul gems which all stack perfectly like this:

Lesser Soul Gem (15)

Common Soul Gem (3)

etc.

but when I fill the Lesser ones, it can look like this:

Lesser Soul Gem (lesser (7)

Lesser Soul Gem (lesser)

Lesser Soul Gem (lesser

etc.

Why is it broken like that? Also, when I drop a soul gem from the ones that don't stack, they disappear. They don't add to the stack nor show up in my inventory. Gone forever.

Soul gems are tricky...

There are pre-placed filled gems & pre-placed empty gems.

Filled stack with filled & empty stack with empty.

However, the empty gems can be filled by the player BUT this makes a different item that cannot be stacked with the pre-filled gems. Souls have different sizes and are placed into the smallest available gem that is large enough to hold them. Player filled soul gems stack by type of gem & size of soul in the gem. Therefore you can get a lot of different items of the "same thing". Also note that if you drop a player filled soul gem to the ground, the soul will leave. You can safely place them in containers, but not upon the ground.

Ok, either you're misunderstanding me or I fail to understand you.

Let's say I have 16 petty soul gems.

8 are empty and stack.

3 are pre-filled with a petty soul and stack

5 are player-filled with a petty soul but these don't stack.

So player-filled soul gems don't stack with other player-filled soul gems of the same soul gem and soul? Like petty soul gem.

Soul gems not stacking correctly has been a problem since the game's release. There's some talk about it here: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim_talk:Soul_Gem#Stacking

And a mod that offers a fix here: http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/5312#content

Hello, bringing this thread back to life to point out that this mod is no longer available, and there doesn't seem to be any replacement. This is an issue in the OG Skyrim.

The mod does still exist. The Nexus has undergone various site changes over the years. The link posted in 2012 no longer works. This is the correct link as of today's date: https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/5312

For future reference, if you find an old link you can take the mod number (in this case 5312) and replace the mod number in the URL of any other mod's current link.
