How to tell where new village/settlement is

I'm planning on adding several new villages/settlements to my next playthrough. However, some of the ones I'm looking at, when talking about where they're at, don't have anything beyond a vague description like "west of Winterhold". I need to figure out if another village/settlement that's also "west of Winterhold" will conflict with the first one. I really don't want to have to load up my game and then run around exploring various areas to see if there's a problem, so I'm looking for an alternative method.

I've been trying to google how to do it but I just can't figure out the right search words to get the info I need. I'm guessing I can use xEdit but, again, I can't figure out what to google to learn how to do it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Look through the descriptions and comments of the mods. If there's location conflicts, someone who uses the mod(s) will have added that in a comment. Or you can close your eyes and jump. Worst that can happen is a CTD. And it's not like we never had those.

Thanks for the answer! I should have mentioned in the original post, but I've already gone through the description and comments of those mods. I've even tried googling the two mods to see if anyone made a post anywhere on the internet talking about this; if they have, I couldn't find it.

I wish it would CTD. That would make my life significantly easier in regards to this. Unfortunately, from everything I've read about new towns/settlements, they probably won't crash when loaded at the same time. Instead, it will just look like an absolute mess with the two towns/settlements on top of one another. So the only way I could know for sure would be to go to go to the villages and see them, which sounds simple except it would mean I'd have to scour "west of Winterhold" which is a pretty large area. As I said in my original post, I don't want to have to do that which is why I'l looking for an alternative method.

Thank you for your answer though!

Most settlements have a map marker that can be seen, even when not having come across said settlement. I'm using a coupple of mods that add locations to Skyrim and Solstheim. All of Arthmoor's villages, a mod that add over sixty ruins and caves. Arthmoor's Dolmens and Skyshard mods and one that add runestones with map markers. Can't recall anything significant having been added 'west' of Winterhold.

Do they always have map markers or is that something that a creator has to add? I was kind of going with the assumption that it was the latter and that maybe they didn't all add them (because sometimes that sort of thing happens). If it's the former though then, yeah, that could definitely make it easier. If you were to download a mod that makes every area instantly discovered (instead of having to actually explore) would they show up?

I cannot remember which two were just "west of Winterhold" because I've been making a list to go through and pick from. (Currently there are 20 mods, with some of them adding more than one location.) I'm currently in the "quick scan and make list" phase with the "more in-depth reading and compatibility check" to be the next phase. (Thus why I'm trying to figure out how to find out where the villages/settlements are at.)

Arthmoor's Granite Hill is actually one of the ones I've been having trouble with. Legendary Cities has something called Granite Hall. Apparently there's some controversy about whether Granite Hill and Granite Hall are the same town or not. Arthmoor says they are, Legendary's creator says they're not and specifies theirs is Granite Hall, not Granite Hill. However, that doesn't mean they're not both in the same area. Legendary has a pic of a where it is on the map but Arthmoor doesn't; Arthmoor simply states that it's near "Granite Hill dragon mound". However, after a lot of googling I cannot find where that actually is. I've also searched through both mods comments and can't find mention of compatibility between the two. I know that Arthmoor is still active and so I could just ask them but it seems silly to bother them if I can figure it out myself, especially since I might need it for other locations. (I mean, if nothing else works that's what I'll do if Legendary Cities' Granite Hall makes the cut.)

On a computer, open the console and type tmm,1. That's toggle map markers and it will show 'em all. Dunno if it makes them instantly fast-travellable. Map markers must be added when making a settlement/village mod, but it's the normal thing to do since most players use the fast-travel system.

Thank you! I'll try that out.
