Theives Guild

I don't care if the guild is going for the robin hood approach or the thug approach, i want to sneak around and STEAL things.

that's what oblivion gets right. in skyrim, your expected to go around with heavy armour and a warhammer killing things.

And the idea of a thieves guild armour is stupid. more so when the guards recognize the armour.

Not really, I've played through the Thieves Guild twice and I suck at stealth in this game, I managed fine with light armour, a bow and a dagger. I avoided killing if I could, but I didn't hesitate to cut a few throats if I had to. I really don't see where you're coming from with this one.

As for Guild Armour, yeah that is a bit silly. But then I figure the Thieves armour could just as easily be practical light armour for any adventurer. It doesn't really look like something made specifcally for thievery, I usually either ignore it when guards comment on it, or pretend they're corrupt like so many of them are.

I probably should have worded that better. Not saying its impossible to be sneaky, or use light armour or whatever, its just that you get in no trouble when you kill, killing is recommended, killing is easier than sneaking by, ect.

In oblivion, killing anyone on the job gets you in trouble with the guild, giving you a reason to be sneaky. The thieves guild in skyrim wasn't built with stealth in mind.

Skyrim is designed with the mentality of being able to do anything in the game no matter what skills you picked. That doesn't mean you have to do it, there is choice for a reason. You can choose to complete the mage questline as a warrior. If you feel dumb doing it, thats your problem. I find Skyrim to be a very versatile game. I can go god mode and just have fun killing things (Like GTA) or I can set myself rules and roleplay.

Well, I don't see why the guild would care if you kill people as long as it doesn't hurt their profits. That's why they tell you not to kill Gulum-Ei, but don't really mind if you kill Aringoth as long as you get hold of what's in his safe. Goldenglow estate is a good example actually, when I do that, I can sneak past all the guards and if I'm playing a thief who takes pride in slipping in and out unseen that's what I do. On the other hand, if I am playing a thief who only cares about getting the job done, I'll cutting throats untill i reach my objective. The fact that the guild allows both of these approaches is great, not all thieves work in the same way after all.

The thieves guild are not Robin Hood types at all if you play the radiant quests (Vex's shill jobs), you know what I'm talking about : they plant "evidence" that you stole on a innocent person who is framed to be either be arrested or killed by the guards. Even the first quest A Change Arrangement is all about this principle of framing Brand-Shei for personal gain, they are just as evil as the Dark Brotherhood (who you can destroy) but you can't do anything about the Thieves Guild without a mod like mine (link in my signature).

It's also kinda off putting that about half of them have the same "voice actor" as Mercer Frey.

Who is great for Mercer Frey (Having voiced Garret in the Thief games) but admittedly overused. Putting voice actor in quotes isn't really fair though, he also voices Clavicus Vile and Barbas which shows range and versatility. If you want to blame someone, blame the director who chose to use his "Mercer" voice on such a huge amount of NPC's when the actor is clearly capable of doing other voices.

I like to complete all the quest lines and have a highly skilled character in almost every aspect. I just complete them in a particular order. I tend to go to the Dark Brotherhood or do the Civil War first simply because those feel like nice starter questlines. The Companions and completing parts of the main quest chain feels about right too. Winterhold is a close second simply because its a school. You can go there thinking you are a fresh student. Hell it could of been the reason why you were entering Skyrim in the first place just so happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. I like to do the Thieves guild after the Dark Brotherhood simply because the Thieves Guild tends to have more of a moral code on murdering people unlike the Dark Brotherhood. So its like your character is changing a new leaf on how they want to approach things in life. Over time as your character tackles different things you turn into that "jack of all trades". You are after all the Dragonborn and regularly slay dragons. Why not be super strong and highly versatile while you do it?

People can play however they feel like though. That is the nice thing about this game. So many options.

I'll do the "get a taste, realize it's not for me" roleplay most of the time if I have involvements with both TG and DB. If I finish one though I abandon the other.

Personally, I think the TG armor makes sense but only once you've re-established TG presence in a hold. At that point wearing the armor sends a nice message to both guards and citizens.

Now the assassin armor in a city makes absolutely zero sense at all. They know you are there for one thing and one thing only when they see that. Every guard in the city should go into DEFCON 1 when they see you waltz through town in that garb.

I''ve actually been considering making a mod for that, basically any guard who sees you wearing Shrouded armor would kill you on sight. Not sure how I would go about it though and it wouldn't really be for me as I hate the look of that armor, I might wear the cowl once I get Guild Master armor though.

Also, I've recently made a new character who is a thief and assassin. I just finished up all the required minor jobs from Delvin and Vex to restore the guild and they offer plenty of oppurtunity to sneak around and steal things, most of them are based on exactly that. Burglary, sneak in somewhere and steal something. Shill, sneak in and place something. Fishing, pick pockets. Bedlam, go nuts. The point is, I don't see where that complaint is coming from, the Thieves Guild main quest certainly leaves a lot to be desired in that sense, but there's an infinite number of misc quests that are all about thievery. I can see why that wouldn't be good enough, they are repetitive and bland, but I think the Thieves Guild story is good as it is and has enough sneaking and stealing involved when coupled with the other minor jobs. I think I would be more annoyed if the pacing of the story was too slow to fit in as much stealing as possible.

After I just became Guild Master for the Thieves Guild, I walked past Vekel the Man and he said (for the 100th time): "So you're Brynjolf's new protege, eh? Don't look like much to me." I really, really wish I could kill him.

Edit: wow, it seems that many don't recognize you as Guild Master, or at least their reaction dialog never changes. I set Vekel to nonessential and put a bolt through his skull and Vex still referred to me as "Brynjolf's little protege" when I went to go pay reparations.
