Opi19
You just have to go online once and then you can start in offline mode. Steam is good in that it has your collection of games in one place, nice and organized. Updates are automatic. Anyone remember the days of trying to find the correct patch and installing it manually? lol. BUT It has some really evil stuff in there too. You DO NOT own the games you 'own'. You are pretty much leasing them. What I mean by that is that you CANNOT sell your account with all the games you 'own' to anybody. That is a fact that a lot of people like to forget. If they find that you're trying to sell your account they will freeze your account and I think they can take it away (I am not sure on that one but I wouldn't be surprised). Also I don't like this push to make all games digitized. Me, personally I like to have my games in physical copy. I like to see my row of games on a shelf instead of seeing a row of game titles on the GUI. And I feel my games are far safer in my house than in the cloud. Steam offers a crapton of convenience in exchange for taking your right to own what you buy.

Good points, and I would just like to add (not directed to you, but to everyone): Even if a game is Steam-only, most big titles also has physical copies (like Skyrim) that requires Steam activation, but at least you now have the physical copy should something happen. Some people are afraid of the inevitable day when Valve stops supporting Steam, and we will lose all our games. Do not worry, Valve have already stated that should Steam ever fade out of existence, they will unlock all games so that Steam is no longer required, and on that day, you DO own all the games you have "leased". ;)
bben46
Just having a purchased CD does not necessarily make your game legal. There are many sites and even stores selling pirated versions on CD to suckers who think they are buying a legal copy but are not. - The LEGAL version on cd requires you to sign up at steam. In return you automatically get updated to the latest version, you get a FREE copy of the CK, and the legal DLCs actually work. The illegal (pirated CDs) are just out of luck when it comes to updates CK & a lot of mods that just don't work properly on a pirate version. If they don't work, don't blame Steam, and don't blame Bethsoft. They didn't sell you that stolen copy. :rolleyes:The pirate CDs look nearly identical to the legal. The giveaway is selling a US $60 game for $5 to $10. :whistling:Yup, you got a bargain. Now try to update it with the newest version so it will work with that mod you want to play with. :wallbash:You will spend more time fighting with it and whining that it's Steam's fault or Bethsoft's fault when it's YOUR fault for getting a pirate version that can't be updated like it was designed to - by steam. The pirates 'cracked' it alright - they broke it while they were doing it too. We do ban for using a pirated version - even if you paid the pirate for it. :( For anyone that has one of these No steam CDs - good luck with getting any support, You don't get it here. And good luck with getting your money back from the pirate that sold it to you.
Lachdonin
It has some really evil stuff in there too. This is really the only remotely valid aguement the Steam haters have. Of crouse, it omits the fact that federal law (both in Canada and the US, at least) prohibits resale without a lisense, and restricts public viewing of both video and games, as well as listening to music ("public" where i am constitutes 15 or more persons, regardless of how many own the viewed material). For this reason, for instance, you cannot legally have a Halo tournament at school (so long as its 15+ people) without first getting approval from Microsoft, which will almost certianly come with a price tag. The ownership rules through Steam are not particularly more stringent than the standard federal rules, as they restrict acces to your individual personage, for your individual use, viewing and enjoyment. The way the system (not Steam, but Copyright) is intended to work is to force each individual to pay for access to the material. And all that is rather tame compared to your average Cell-plan contract... Those things just stop short of owning your soul. But anyway, the arguement above centers on the idea that Steam violates the basic laws of ownership, without understanding how restrictive said laws actually are. You don't really OWN anything, unless it is used in a personal manner, as intended, never shared, and not subject to any recalls or retractions by the copyright holder. Because of that, selling a Steam account already violates the basic principals of ownership (attempted resale) and can't be viewed as a violation of your rights (as much as i like the idea of copyright and government, their implementation is catastrophically wrong, as shown by this fact). The only way Steam would actually violate you rights is if it shut down, thus cutting you off from materials you paid for, for personal usage. Until such a thing happens, they aren't technicly doing anything wrong. Unethical, sure, but the entire system is unethical. At the same time, you have the massive convienience of ready acces to your games library anywhere you have an internet connection, the ability to buy games anywhere you have a connection, access to peer-made content, reviews, help, updates, sales, etc. On the other side, it offers a easy publishing platform for independants who are trying to get into the industry, allowing both them and major players to reach an increasingly wide player base without the costs of making DVD's (which, admitedly, should kinda be passed on to us). Programs like Steam and Origin are whats keeping PC gaming alive, as the shops displays constantly shrink in favor of Consoles. As a PC gamer first and formost, so long as someones carrying the flag, and not turning into Staling because of it, i'm willing to toss them my support. xmacrosx
I really don't mind steam (I keep it in offline mode just in case I lose my internet connection so I can still play Skyrim!). I think I'd be pretty pissed though if I bought a store copy, brought it home to install and play and couldn't because I didn't have an internet connection. I'm not 100% sure if this is really the case because I do have a connection, but if it is there should be a way to play the game if you were in that situation. Thats my biggest gripe with steam. AnimeOtaku102
Discussions of that nature can get you banned........Discussion... of what? A Steam feature (Steam -> Go Offline) or the sale (66% or 75%, can't remember, wasn't paying too much attention since I already bought it) last month? Or maybe mocking the OP for saying something stupid?
